However he has not extended the same olive branch to voters north of the border - telling Nicola Sturgeon he would not lend any support to a second independence referendum.
Meanwhile Jeremy Corbyn has refused to take responsibility for the worst Labour showing since 1935 - blaming Brexit for the party’s devastating defeat.
Caroline Lucas keeps Brighton Pavilion seat
The Green leader has won with a huge majority of 19,940.
She also gives a passionate speech about the electoral systems failings and the state of the country.
Tories take Ashfield from Labour
That means that Lee Anderson, the Conservative, is the new MP. That's the Lee Anderson famous for suggesting that "nuisance" council tenants should be forced to live in fields and pick vegetables, as well as faking a doorstep interview.
Conservatives gain both of Labour's Stoke-on-Trent seats
As has long been expected, both of the party's seats have fallen to the Conservatives.
Mike Gapes loses seat to Labour
Controversial ex-Labour MP Mike Gapes – who was one of the defectors who left the party to join The Independent Group – has roundly lost his seat. Ilford South stays Labour.
Derby North goes Tory
Another northern seat taken by the Conservatives. This time around Amanda Solloway wins Derby North, with a majority of 2,540.
(That's also the seat that used to be held by Chris Williamson, the Labour MP who was kicked out over anti-semitism. He ran as an independent, got 635 and lost his deposit.)
Keir Starmer calls on party to 'rebuild' as he wins
Sir Keir Starmer, in his acceptance speech, said it was time for the Labour party to rebuild.
He said: "My heart goes out to the millions who needed change in this election having already suffered under 10 years of the Tories.
"This is their loss.
"They won't get the change they so desperately need.
"Now we as a movement, as a whole movement, need to reflect on this result and understand it together, but we also have a duty to rebuild, starting now."

Conservatives win Rother Valley for the first time ever
The first Tory ever to win Rother Valley in all of its 101-year history has been elected. The Shell PR man beat local Labour rival Sophie Wilson.
Neither of the two candidates were born when Labour stalwart Sir Kevin Barron, who retired ahead of the election, was first elected in 1983.
