The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have released a picture of their daughter Lilibet after celebrating her first birthday.

The photograph of Lilibet, who celebrated the occasion with family and close friends of the Sussexes at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor on Saturday, is understood to have been taken by family friend Misan Harriman.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s second child, born on 4 June 2021 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, was named in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple have been “incredibly touched” by the birthday wishes that have flooded in for Lilibet.

More than 100,000 dollars (£79,800) in donations to the World Central Kitchen were made in her honour by people around the world, for which the Duke and Duchess have also expressed their gratitude.

It follows reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had returned to the US following a short trip to the UK for the jubilee celebrations.

The early departure means the Sussexes missed the finale of the festivities, which saw the Queen make a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the royal standard flag was raised above the residence during the pageant.

Platinum Jubilee Pageant: When is it and who is performing?

To conclude this weekend’s festivities, a Platinum Jubilee Pageant is taking place today in celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign.

The pageant comprises four acts to tell the story of the Queen’s reign and the UK’s changing social landscape.

More than 10,000 people from across the Commonwealth are involved in the pageant, including the military, more than 6,000 volunteers, performers, key workers, and 2,500 members of the general public.

The show will feature performances from Ed Sheeran, Sir Cliff Richard and Dame Shirley Bassey and will be aired from 1pm on BBC One.

How the Buckingham Palace balcony became key to royal family’s existence

From royal weddings, war victory celebrations to Prince Louis covering his ears at the sound of the RAF fly-past, the Buckingham Palace balcony has acted as a precious connection to the royal family.

“This is the monarchy at their most visible,” says Professor Pauline MacLaren from the University of London’s Centre for the Study of Modern Monarchy. “But it is also them at their most strategic. Time and again down the years, they have used appearances there – with considerable shrewdness, it has to be said – to emphasise and maintain their place at the heart of the nation.”
