Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. The 2022 Met Gala red carpet was full of gilded glamour as guests attended fashion’s most-anticipated event of the year.

From Blake Lively to Kim Kardashian, the best-dressed stars of the Met Gala stunned in vintage dresses and multiple outfit changes.

The theme of the evening’s Met Gala was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” the second part of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, which opened on 18 September. The first part of the exhibition was reflected in last year’s Met Gala theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which was in celebration of all things American Fashion.

Last year, the Met Gala took place on 13 September and the year before, it was cancelled due to the pandemic. Usually, around 600 celebrities are invited to mark the glitzy event in their social calendars, but this year and last, the numbers are closer to 400.

As per tradition, the guest list for this year’s event was carefully presided over by Vogue’sAnna Wintour, who has run the gala since 1995. It was announced earlier this year that the 2022 hosts would include Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who served as the night’s official co-chairs.

Met Gala honours Rihanna with a ‘historic’ statue

While Rihanna was notably absent from last night’s event, the organisers chose to honour the mother-to-be with a special statue in the Met’s Greek and Roman galleries.

The digital sculpture is based on the Fenty Beauty mogul’s recent cover shoot for American Vogue, which sees her dressed in a red Alaïa bodysuit.

Rihanna shared a video of the statue to her Twitter and Instagram, describing it as a “historic tribute”.

Ashley Tisdale says her ‘past iconic looks’ would be her Met Gala style inspiration

While High School Musical star Ashley Tisdale is yet to secure an invitation to fashion’s biggest night of the year, she’s already planning what she might wear.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, the actor joked that she would recreate one of her “past iconic looks”.

She included four photographs of herself at various red carpet events as a young teen.

In one picture she is seen wearing a gold skirt, layered over a pair of light-wash jeans. To accessorise, she wore gold ballet flats and a piano-inspired clutch.

In another, she dons a gold army print skirt, a pink jacket and a pink fur stole.

The tweet, which has since been liked more than 600,000 times, has left fans amused by Tisdale’s Y2K fashion, and positive attitude about the lack of Met Gala invite.

Ryan Reynolds was ever the supportive husband on Monday evening, as Blake Lively – a co-chair of this year’s event – stunned in two Versace looks.

The Gossip Girl star arrived in a copper strapless gown with a bustled back and full-length matching satin gloves.

Then, with the help of three team members, she unwrapped her dress to reveal turquoise draping and gloves underneath.

The moment also saw a sweet reaction from Reynolds, who was captured looking on, clapping and smiling as his wife changed outfits on the iconic Met steps.

Amy Schumer sparks confusion with her definition of 'gilded glamour’

Amy Schumer has recieved a mixed reaction after she offered up an unconventional response to a question from La La Anthony on last night’s carpet.

When asked what the event’s dress code “gilded glamour” means to her, the comedian replied: “Um, a vibrator.”

“You know what I’m going to say, it’s ridiculous,” Schumer continued, before adding: “Everyone’s always at home [wondering] what is Amy going to wear this year.”

The response prompted a range of reactions from viewers. Some praised Schumer’s honesty, while others questioned her seemingly less-than-excited presence at the gala.

Elon Musk shared his plans for Twitter and attended with his mother

Elon Musk brought his mother as his date to last night’s event.

The billionaire arrived on the red carpet in a simple black Tuxedo, while his mother, supermodel Maye Musk, opted for a long-sleeved red velvet mini dress.

He also stopped to chat with La La Anthony, telling Vogue’s livestream that he hopes to make Twitter as “inclusive as possible”.

His comments come days after it was announced that he would buy platform for $44 billion (£34.5bn).

Speaking of his goals for Twitter, Musk said: ““[It] would be to make Twitter as inclusive as possible, and to have as broad a swath of the country and the rest of the world on Twitter, and that they find it interesting and entertaining and funny, and that it makes their life better.”

Hillary Clinton wore a gown embroidered with the names of historic American women

The former First Lady and Secretary or State made her first appearance at the event since 2001 wearing a custom Joseph Altuzarra gown.

The scarlet red off-the-shoulder gown was embroidered with the names of 60 women Clinton admires, including Madeline Albright, Abigail Adams, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Lady Bird Johnson, and her mother, Dorothy Rodham.

Altuzarra told Vogue that it was important that Clinton’s dress held significance.

“For better or worse, whatever she wears is dissected and analyzed so thoroughly that you have to be very thoughtful about the choices that you make,” Altuzarra said.

“Obviously I was thinking about making her look great, but I was also thinking about the story she’s going to be telling through this dress, and how she would actually vocalise that when people ask her about it. I wanted that story to be something she felt a personal connection to.”

Nicki Minaj addresses her Met Gala wardrobe malfunction

Nicki Minaj has opened up about her wardrobe malfunction at this year’s Met Gala and why her dress kept slipping down.

For the occasion, Minaj wore a black ball gown with feathers, a large black belt, and leather pants. She completed the look, by Burberry’s Ricardo Tisci, with a matching black baseball cap.

But Minaj struggled with one aspect of the dress, as the strapless gown kept falling down because the bra within didn’t fit properly.

“The only unplanned thing about my look is that my boobs [are] popping out,” she told Vogue. “Because they made my cup size a little small.”

Vogue host La La Anthony joked that the dress was designed for Minaj before she had her son in September 2020.

Minaj agreed, telling viewers: “Enjoy these titties, because you won’t ever see them again.”

Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala prep signals a bleak return to toxic Y2K diet culture.

The reality star revealed that she lost over a stone in less than a month in preperation for wearing Marilyn Monroe’s JFK dress.

But, as Laura Hampson argues, these comments are a giant step back in terms of body positivity.

Laura writes: “While fad diets may have taken a beat recently, glamourising rapid weight loss has not. Just look at Adele or Rebel Wilson. Two women who have achieved immense success in both of their chosen fields, and both who have been endlessly praised for their recent weight losses. The message this praise sends is clear: you only have social currency if you are slim.”
