At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Black Friday shoppers have been buying more items but spending less, according to credit card data
Black Friday has come and gone, but the sales are still going strong, with plenty of UK retailers continuing to reduce their prices throughout the weekend.
With the increasing number of bargains on offer, it seems that shoppers have been taking advantage, making more purchases compared to last year's Black Friday.
Data from Barclaycard reveals that it has seen a 10 per cent increase in transactions, however, the total value of spending has gone down by 12 per cent.
Barclaycard added that it had seen a record high number of purchases made on Friday between 1pm and 2pm, with 1,087 being processed per second.
Konrad Kelling, managing director of Barclaycard Payment Solutions, said: "Our data shows that people have been making a higher number of less expensive purchases than at this time last year.
"This suggests that, while Black Friday is clearly encouraging shoppers to buy, consumers are more likely to be purchasing smaller 'treat' products, rather than splashing out on high-end items."

Cyber Monday is fast-approaching, but what is it and how is it different from Black Friday?
Black Friday is officially over, which means it's nearly time for Cyber Monday, the annual shopping event that always falls on the Monday after Thanksgiving and sees more retailers slashing their prices in the run-up to Christmas.
Originally, Cyber Monday was distinct from Black Friday in that the deals were available exclusively online, but today, the majority of Black Friday shoppers make their purchases on the web so as to avoid the crowds in stores, rendering the two days rather alike.
It's seen as a great opportunity for smaller retailers to promote their products, as they may not have been able to compete with larger retailers on Black Friday.
Many Black Friday deals from retailers such as Amazon will continue all the way through until Cyber Monday.
