Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton with 12 laps remaining to win a thrilling Dutch Grand Prix - his second victory in a row at his home circuit and fourth consecutive win this season - to extend his lead in the Formula One championships standings.

In a throwback to last season’s title battle, the defending champion pitted for soft tyres under a late safety car and emerged behind Hamilton ahead of the restart. When the race resumed, Verstappen was swift in making his move around the outside of Hamilton and surged to a victory that seemed at risk at points during the race.

Hamilton’s task might have been easier had team-mate George Russell not pitted from second, however, and the seven-time champion was left fuming with Mercedes as he was left a sitting duck on old tyres. Hamilton was passed by Russell and then Charles Leclerc and was furious with his team for being the only driver left on medium tyres.

Leclrec salvaged a podium on what was another nightmare race for Ferrari, as Carlos Sainz saw his chances end thanks to a 12-second pit stop early on.

Follow all the action here with The Independent:

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 18/72 - Verstappen, Hamilton, Russell

Charles Leclerc pits as he complains about his tyres - a much smoother stop, 2.5 seconds!

Verstappen now 11 seconds in front of second-place Hamilton.

Lando Norris also in and he comes out in ninth place, just behind Carlos Sainz, on the hard tyres.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 12/72 - Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz

It’s looking like those on the mediums might have an advantage here, with the soft runners reporting high degradation around Zandvoort.

Vettel, Ricciardo and Gasly are the first ones to pit - quite early even in a two-stop race.

Verstappen’s lead from Leclerc is now 2.2 seconds, while Hamilton is still in DRS range but can’t get any closer than half-a-second....

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 9/72 - Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz

Verstappen’s engineer tells the Red Bull man that he is expecting Ferrari to push hard in two laps time, but he’s extended his margin to Charles Leclerc to 1.6 seconds.

Lewis Hamilton is still within DRS range but is struggling to open the door for a move, tricky on the medium tyres. For context amongst the top lot, Sainz is five seconds behind his team-mate so a bit of a gap opening up after the top-two.

Meanwhile towards the bottom, Fernando Alonso makes the overtake down the main straight with DRS, gets past Pierre Gasly, and is up to 12th.
