Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton with 12 laps remaining to win a thrilling Dutch Grand Prix - his second victory in a row at his home circuit and fourth consecutive win this season - to extend his lead in the Formula One championships standings.

In a throwback to last season’s title battle, the defending champion pitted for soft tyres under a late safety car and emerged behind Hamilton ahead of the restart. When the race resumed, Verstappen was swift in making his move around the outside of Hamilton and surged to a victory that seemed at risk at points during the race.

Hamilton’s task might have been easier had team-mate George Russell not pitted from second, however, and the seven-time champion was left fuming with Mercedes as he was left a sitting duck on old tyres. Hamilton was passed by Russell and then Charles Leclerc and was furious with his team for being the only driver left on medium tyres.

Leclrec salvaged a podium on what was another nightmare race for Ferrari, as Carlos Sainz saw his chances end thanks to a 12-second pit stop early on.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 38/72 - Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton

Hamilton gets the move done on the next lap around the outside of turn one!

Awkward moment straight away for Hamilton though, with Vettel coming out of the pit lane holding up both cars - but eventually they squeeze through.

Hamilton up to third!

Hamilton goes for the move down the main straight - Perez locks up around turn one but still holds position as he comes over to cover off the Mercedes!

Hamilton is still right on the tail of the Mexican. Yet to pass him though...

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 36/72 - Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez

Hamilton sets a new fastest lap of the race and is clossing in on Sergio Perez in third - the gap is now 1.1 seconds. Can the Red Bull hold up the Mercedes in a manner similar to Abu Dhabi last year?!

At the front, Verstappen’s lead to Leclerc is 8.1 seconds but the Red Bulls and Ferraris will almost certainly have to pit again...

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 32/72 - Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez

George Russell now pits and comes out ahead of Carlos Sainz and is in fifth - that slow pit stop has really cost the Ferrari man!

Hamilton is up to fourth - but he’s looking good on the hard tyres early on and does NOT have to stop again! Could it be working out beautifully for the seven-time world champion?

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 25/72 - Hamilton, Russell, Verstappen

Verstappen now clawing in on Russell, 1.7 seconds is the gap - can the Mercedes hold up the Red Bull to help his team-mate out in front?

Looks like the Silver Arrows are going for just a one-stop strategy... this *could* work out very well for Mercedes here!

Verstappen has just set a fastest lap however...

F1 Dutch Grand Prix: Lap 18/72 - Hamilton, Russell, Verstappen

Max Verstappen now pits just a lap after Leclerc. Not the quickest, 3.4 seconds, but he’s still ahead of Charles Leclerc and is now in third.

Mediums for Verstappen. Lewis Hamilton now leads the race, but is yet to come in. Same story for George Russell in second too...
