Where did Black Friday originate?
The first use of Black Friday dates back to the Fifties in Philadelphia, where the local police department coined the term to describe the huge traffic jams, overcrowded pavements and mobbed stores in the city on the day after Thanksgiving.
It wasn’t until the 1980s that the phrase caught on in the rest of America, and was used as a marketing ploy to promote the consumer event and encourage sales. It was then deployed as a reference to the financial status of stores, as they went from being “in the red” to “in the black” as profits increased.
It has since become one of the biggest shopping events in the calendar – not just in the United States, but also in the UK and other parts of the world.
While it was once just a one-day sale, it’s now evolved into a four-day bonanza, and in some cases, it spans the entire month of November, with deals on tech, beauty, home appliances, fashion, toys and much more.
When does the Pandora Black Friday sale end?
When it comes to jewellery, Pandora’s Black Friday 2024 sale is continuing to offer up to 30 per cent off - but you’ve only got one more day to shop your wishlist, as the deals will end on Monday 2 December.
This year, Pandora is treating us to up to 30 per cent off selected jewellery from its essence line, pavé collection and cult charms from the ‘moments’ collection, as well as pendant necklaces, rings, studs and more. A top tip from me – if you sign up to Pandora’s free loyalty scheme, you can get an extra 10 per cent off with the code “EXTRA10”.
Pandora polished wave ring: Was £40, now £28, Pandora.net
A minimalist style for those looking to build their ring stack, Pandora’s ring is finished in 14k gold plating. Adding intrigue, the ring boasts a subtle wave design. With 30 per cent off the price in Pandora’s Black Friday sale, the ring is now less than £30 (the perfect stocking filler, in my opinion).

This Nespresso coffee machine is nearly half price
If you’re the type of person that can’t function without caffeine first thing in the morning, an at-home coffee machine is the perfect investment. The vertuo pop is Nespresso’s most affordable coffee machine – and, naturally, it’s been tried and tested by the team at IndyBest. Spoiler alert: Lauren loved it.
Nespresso vertuo pop coffee pod machine: Was £99.99, now £54, Amazon.co.uk
Now, Amazon has slashed the price of the machine by nearly 50 per cent. Receiving a glowing five-star review, she praised the “small but mighty” machine that will slot seamlessly into most people’s kitchen countertops. “Weighing in at just 3.5kg, if you have a large cupboard and won’t be using the machine every day, it’s also incredibly easy to store away until you need it,” she added.
