From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

One dramatic episode in and there's already people being 'muggy', 'salty' and 'extra', just some of the unique words you can expect to hear.
Here's everything you need to know about what went on in episode one.
Need a reminder of who’s heading to the luxury villa in Majorca, Spain? Then flick through the gallery below, which holds snippets of information on each of the eleven tanned, toned, and tattooed contestants.
This year’s Love Island will be the longest season of the show so far, this year’s 150,000 applicants being told they would need to be available for a minimum of ten weeks for the series.
Caroline Flack – who will once again be hosting – previously said this series will be the “longest yet”. Ian Sterling will also be returning as the voice of Love Island.
Some other tidbits of information: while unconfirmed, the contestants (many of whom leave their jobs or take extensive leave to be on the show) get paid a rumoured £200 a week for participating.
ITV2’s popular spin-off show Aftersun also returns this year, while the channel has also launched a podcast series named The Morning After.

In case you're new to the show, the couples all sleep in the same room.
No, not in one giant bed, but in a row of double beds, in one narrow room in the villa.
Here's Sean O'Grady's thoughts on the awkward first night...
"Is 'never seen a man cream?' scripted or has Danni inherited Daddy's cockney wit?"
Oh my.
We are in the situation that this show is designed for: two people interested in the same person.
Laura and Samira are both interested in Adam, the 11th contestant that is yet to pair up.
ITV/PAThis is the bedroom where all of the contestants sleep. One room. No walls.
"I want to show you all my layers", Nial says. Can't help but point out the fact he has no layers, he is permanently just in swimming trunks.
It's fair to say the last hour and a half has been an emotional rollercoaster.
We're just about clinging on to the ride still.
So what have we got to look forward to?
It seems 11th contestant, Adam, is finally going to pair-up in the next coupling, so who will be left alone?
Okay Love Island 2018 viewers. The moment is here. Adam has to pick a woman to 'couple' with.
It's tense...
And in unbelievable scenes, Love Island has left us on the biggest cliffhanger since Sherlock jumping off that building.
Just as Adam was about to reveal which woman he was going to choose (therefore leaving another man alone, in case you missed the whole point of the episode) ITV 2 cruelly ended the programme.
How will we cope waiting a whole 24 hours to find out?
