Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

After a two-month delay, the nominations for the 2021 Oscars have finally announced.

The pandemic caused the 93rd Academy Awards to be pushed back, but Hollywood is now reacting to the news.

Husband and wife duo Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas named the films in contention during a live broadcast, which starts at 12.19pm GMT.

Mank leads the way with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, as well as David Fincher for Best Director, Gary Oldman for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Amanda Seyfried for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

British actors have got a significant look-in at this year’s ceremony, too, via Oldman’s nod for Mank as well as nominations for Sound of Metal’s Riz Ahmed, and Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman in The Father.

Also, Steven Yeun being nominated for Best Actor is incredible news. He becomes the first Asian-American to do so.

His Walking Dead family will no doubt be proud (he played Glenn on the show).

In terms of snubs, we’ll start with The Mauritanian, which received a huge amount of love at the Golden Globes and Baftas. It failed to receive a single nomination today.

Another snub worth mentioning is the fact that Regina King was omitted from Best Director for One Night in Miami.

Congratulations to Promising Young Woman writer-director Emerald Fennell.

As we mentioned earlier, Best Picture can have up to 10 nominees  this year, there are only eight, so the debate over which two films missed out on nominations has naturally begun.

It’s worth noting that, due to a rule change, from next year, the Best Picture nominee count will be fixed at 10.

A moving statistic, but one worth noting.
