From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

After a two-month delay, the nominations for the 2021 Oscars have finally announced.

The pandemic caused the 93rd Academy Awards to be pushed back, but Hollywood is now reacting to the news.

Husband and wife duo Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas named the films in contention during a live broadcast, which starts at 12.19pm GMT.

Mank leads the way with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, as well as David Fincher for Best Director, Gary Oldman for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Amanda Seyfried for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

British actors have got a significant look-in at this year’s ceremony, too, via Oldman’s nod for Mank as well as nominations for Sound of Metal’s Riz Ahmed, and Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman in The Father.

We should note that Rocks, the film that deservedly swept the Bafta noms, isn’t eligible for nominations due to being released in the US outside of the voting window.

Also, Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series of films wasn’t able to be nominated, either, so no Mangrove or Lovers Rock.

An excellent point about the Animated Feature category that also doubles in reminding you that a Croods sequel actually came out in the last year.

Expect Pixar to get two nominations for Onward and Soul.

In a year that was plagued with delays due to the pandemic, Netflix will likely dominate the nominations with the following:

Da 5 Bloods, Hillbilly Elegy, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Mank, News of the World, Pieces of a Woman, The Trial of the Chicago 7

Not forgetting Amazon Prime Video whose One night in Miami and Sound of Metal will pick up some nods.

Talking of Sound of Metal – a nomination for Riz Ahmed is extremely likely, and would mark his first acting Oscar nod.

Chadwick Boseman, who died last year, is expected to pick up a posthumous nomination for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

He’s also in contention for a Supporting Actor nod for Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods.

A real interesting one is whether Maria Bakalova  –the unknown who appeared in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm – will get nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

She got beaten at the Golden Globes by Rosamund Pike, who didn’t even get a Bafta nomination. Her chances are high!

Jacob Stolworthy15 March 2021 11:59

We wonder if Rudy Giuliani would have anything to say on the matter if Maria does get nominated?

Jacob Stolworthy15 March 2021 12:06

Well, these have crept up on us – according to the official Oscars page, the nominations will be happening in two parts in 10 minutes.

Jacob Stolworthy15 March 2021 12:09

This will essentially be me when they’re being announced, so please bear with.
