Heathrow Terminal 5 almost empty as British Airways pilots strike

British Airways pilots that are members of the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) have walked out for the second day in a 48-hour strike over pay.

It's the biggest walkout in the airline's history, with almost all flights cancelled from Heathrow and Gatwick. Flights from London City are unaffected.

British Airways has warned passengers not to show up at the airport if their flight is cancelled.

British Airways’ schedule is expected to be back to near-normal by Thursday, but on Friday the Heathrow Pause group of climate change protestors says it intends to shut down Europe’s biggest airport with the use of drones.

But a Heathrow airport spokesperson said:

We are working closely with a number of stakeholders including the police, Nats and the CAA to ensure that the UK’s hub airport does not close.

We have in place dynamic risk assessment programmes which are carried out by airfield and security experts and at no time will safety be compromised.

As the 48-hour BA pilots' strike draws to a close, it's estimated that 1,700 flights have been cancelled and almost 200,000 passengers have been disrupted over the past two days.
