OUR REVIEW

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

You could spend an hour exploring the hotel's secluded grounds, from the tranquil Japanese garden to the wild woods. Located in the Yorkshire Dales, you're spoilt for choice with several country walks and maps for guidance provided by reception. Close by is the historic cathedral city of Ripon bursting with pubs and restaurants to taste some hearty northern cuisine. Visit the 100 million-year-old Brimham Rocks; the natural giant rock formations were formed when dinosaurs ruled - a must see.

By car: the hotel is one hour from Leeds, 2 hour 10 mins from Manchester and 4 hours 30 mins from London. Free private parking on-site.

By train: London Kings Cross to York takes around 2 hours 30 mins. The station is a 30-minute taxi ride from the hotel. Book trains to York.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

Gold dado rails on duck egg blue, mint or cream walls packed with gilt-framed antique portrait paintings as well as quirky modern renditions, painted ceilings, chandeliers, plush velvet upholstered seating, fresh flowers in vases, white marble sculptures of beautiful classical women and neutral coloured flooring create a light space with historical depth.

THE FACILITIES

Staff are well groomed and thoughtfully dressed, enthusiastic about the hotel and suggestions of places to visit nearby. The on site shop sells local goods including the delicious damson gin in the rooms. Guests can join a free daily wellness class such as yoga and make use of the relaxing Three Graces Spa.

The bedrooms are beautifully furnished and instantly welcoming, the handcrafted Harrison Spinks beds are particularly comfortable, the televisions disguised as paintings blend with the chic interior, and the vases, ornaments, bookends and books create a cosy atmosphere.

FOOD AND DRINK

There are four restaurants to choose from, but we opted for Shaun Rankin's, a Michelin 'Taste of Home,' ten-course tasting menu; snacks such as 'fish & chips; a joyful mouthful of haddock mornay cushioned by crispy tapioca potato strands, lovage emulsion and vinegar powder, through to the cheese course; creamy Lanark Blue and Rankin's creation - a Harrogate bun. High-class yet homely.

Shaun Rankin: Michelin-starred, fine dining. Open Weds-Sun for dinner and Sunday lunch. Set menu from £130 per person.
