From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Instagram, Facebook and Messenger have gone down in a major Thanksgiving outage.

Almost all of Facebook's products were hit by the problems, with the exception of WhatsApp, which appears to have successfully stayed online.

The problems were seen across the world, though did not appear to affect all users the same. Some said they were still able to see parts of each app, while others reported that the services appeared to be working as normal.

The outage recalls the major problems over summer, during which the entire Facebook suits of products went offline for almost a day.

US worst affected

The issues with Instagram appear to be slowly subsiding but reports of Facebook being down seem to be increasing.

Here's a heat map from Down Detector of where the outage reports are coming from:

'18 hours'

While Facebook hasn't officially acknowledged the issue, the platform's status page for developers has finally acknowledged the outage.

Bizarrely, it claims it has been going on for 18 hours. Really it's more like three.

Outage almost resolved

Issues at both Facebook and Instagram seem to be nearly fixed, with outage reports now reduced to a trickle.

Facebook Messenger also appears to be largely back online.

Facebook's server status page still indicating issues

The "Platform Status" dashboard, which is intended to allow developers to track problems with the Facebook platform, is still showing issues with Facebook. But as mentioned earlier it took a good amount of time for the problem to be reflected there – so it might take a while for it to confirm that it has been fixed, too.
