Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Apple just updated every single one of its products. And released some new ones as well.

The company is holding its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, and kicked it off with its most wide-ranging event of the year.

As well as updating the software for all of its products, as it always does, the company showed off. That included updates to the iPad and Mac line – but most of all was the Siri speaker, a talking music system for the home.

Find full coverage on each of those releases – iOS 11, the new macOS, a new Siri and the HomePod speaker – below.

Please allow a moment for the liveblog to load.

iOS 11 is available to developers today. You can sign up for a beta that will open at the end of the month. And it will be available to everyone come the autumn.

Tim Cook's back onstage, and there's surely only one more product launch left to go. But first a video on the iPad Pro and iOS 11.

It's the one last thing.

A lot of chat about music here: AirPods, Apple Music, etc. "But what about our homes?"

Everyone has tried to make internet speakers: some of them sound great but aren't smart (like Sonos), others are very smart but sound terrible (like the Amazon Echo).

So Apple has made the HomePod. A rounded, smart little speaker.

It looks a little like a Google Home, a little like the Mac Pro wrapped in a mesh.

First feature is "rock the house" – i.e. it's loud. It does that using seven different tweeters in the bottom of it, and a huge bass woofer that sits right in the middle.

Andrew Griffin5 June 2017 20:14

All of that is controlled by an A8 chip – the chip that powers your iPhone. It's "perhaps the biggest brain ever in a speaker".

Andrew Griffin5 June 2017 20:14

Next up: "spatial awareness". The speaker can detect the space it's in, and use that information to adjust the audio to balance it. (Sonos can already do something like this, though Apple is selling it as very new.)
