Islam Makhachev submitted Charles Oliveira in the UFC 280 main event on Saturday to win the vacant lightweight title, following in the footsteps of his childhood friend Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Khabib retired unbeaten in 2020, vacating the UFC lightweight strap immediately after retaining it in Abu Dhabi. And it was there that Makhachev won the same belt – almost two years later to the day – submitting Khabib’s literal successor Oliveira to become his fellow Russian’s spiritual successor in the Octagon. Last May, Oliveira won the title vacated by Khabib, and the Brazilian went on to retain it in December. One day before his own scheduled defence against Gaethje this May, however, Oliveira was stripped of the belt after missing weight. Oliveira would submit Gaethje anyway to establish himself as No 1 contender and set up a clash with Makhachev.
That highly-anticipated in-ring meeting played out at the Etihad Arena on Saturday, and it was Makhachev, 31, who came out on top, submitting 33-year-old Oliveira with an arm-triangle choke in Round 2 to win the vacant title. In the co-main event, TJ Dillashaw attempted to battle through a dislocated shoulder in his bantamweight title fight with Aljamain Sterling, but the former champion was largely ineffective and ultimately fell to a second-round TKO loss, as Sterling retained the belt. In the evening’s previous fight, rising 135lbs star Sean O’Malley won a controversial decision against former bantamweight champion Petr Yan. Follow live reaction from UFC 280 below.

At 22 years old, Mokaev is one of the youngest fighters in the UFC, and he is seen by many as a future champion.
Mokaev has fought twice in the UFC – both times this year, once at each edition of UFC London – winning with an early submission in March then on points in July.

Interestingly, Rosa told her corner between rounds that she wasn’t feeling great.
Round 2 likely ended 9-9 with her point deduction, while she was knocked down in the first round but went on to assert herself.
Now the Brazilian has Lansberg up against the fence, though the bantamweights are intermittently trading positions.

The round resumes after the official does indeed deduct a point from Rosa.
Rosa soon secures yet another takedown of Lansberg, though, and she ends the round in control.

More hard kicks by Rosa. Eventually Lansberg stands against the fence, but she eats a harsh knee to the face in the process!
But Lansberg was still grounded, with her left knee on the mat! Therefore, it’s an illegal knee from Rosa, and the action will be paused for now while a doctor checks on Lansberg.

Rosa just about gets Lansberg to the mat with a trip! She’s straight into half-guard and looking to land elbows.
Lansberg has shimmied backwards and is now by the fence, but she’s still flattened out. She’s throwing punches from the bottom, while Rosa is targeting the head and body with strikes from above.
The buzzer sounds. That may well go down as a Rosa round despite the knockdown.

A one-two from Lansberg drops Rosa already! The 40-year-old doesn’t follow up, though, and Rosa quickly stands.
Now Rosa drives Lansberg back to the fence. Knees to the body from Lansberg, who has reversed the position; Rosa responds with her own knee strikes.
