Nunes and Pena make weight for UFC 277

Amanda Nunes restored her status as a dual-weight UFC champion on Saturday night, dominating Julianna Pena to regain the women’s bantamweight title in the main event of UFC 277.

Pena submitted Nunes in December to win the belt from the Brazilian, who also holds the UFC women’s featherweight title, in what is seen as one of the biggest upsets in the history of mixed martial arts. Nunes, however, put things right as far as she was concerned on Saturday, dominating a brave, resilient Pena to secure a unanimous-decision victory (50-45, 50-44, 50-43) over the American and recapture the bantamweight gold.

Nunes, fighting out of a southpaw stance at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, dropped 32-year-old Pena to a knee twice in the first round, before scoring three knockdowns in Round 2. The second of those three was the most significant, Nunes clipping Pena with a powerful lead right hook from southpaw and sending her tumbling to the canvas. The remainder of the five-round fight saw Nunes, 34, take down Pena with ease and land heavy strikes from above – particularly slicing elbows that opened a severe cut along Pena’s hairline – while the American tried to throw up submissions in response.

Nunes vs Pena – Round 1

Lots of feinting from both women early on. Lots. Nunes starts southpaw and switches back and forth, but there’s so little being thrown so far that it doesn’t matter too much at the moment.

Nunes kicks low from southpaw, and Pena comes over the top with a one-two. Same again. An especially hard leg kick from Nunes now.

Both women catch one another on the end of some punches. For Pena, straight punches are the order of the day; for Nunes, right hooks from southpaw are the preferred strike.

One drops Pena to a knee! And the same again a few moments later! Pena responds by increasing her own output, and she catches Nunes a few times.

Nunes tries for a takedown, but Pena prevents it. Nunes tags her a couple of times late in the round. An interesting frame...

It’s time... Next up is the main event!

Women’s featherweight champion Amanda Nunes looks to regain her status as a dual-weight title holder, challenging Julianna Pena for the bantamweight belt that she lost to the American late last year.

Pena (11-4) submitted Nunes (21-5) in the second round at UFC 269 in December, winning the title in what is deemed one of the biggest upsets in the history of mixed martial arts.

She will attempt to prove that the result was no fluke when she takes on Brazilian Nunes, the consensus greatest women’s mixed martial artist of all time, once again tonight.

Never in UFC history have two fighters fought one another twice.

Moreno vs Figueiredo 4 looks likely, though...
