Bragging rights went to Colby Covington on Saturday night as he defeated friend-turned-rival Jorge Masvidal in a seismic grudge match in the main event of UFC 272.
Allegations of unpaid coaching fees, debts to loan sharks, poor parenting and more dominated the back and forths between the former roommates and training partners, leading to their clash in a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In the first two rounds, Covington was warned over an eye poke and lost a position due to a low blow, and he also survived a scare later in the fight after being dropped by an overhand right from Masvidal.
The wrestling specialist dominated the majority of the contest, however, taking down his rival numerous times and seeking chokes against the fence throughout. Covington ultimately secured a unanimous-decision win (49-46, 50-44, 50-45) and proceeded to call out another former teammate in Dustin Poirier, who has teased a move up from lightweight. “I just took care of Miami street trash, now it’s time to take care of Louisiana swamp trash,” Covington said, a US flag draped around his shoulders. “Where you at, Dustin Poirier? You said it’s ‘on sight’. I’ll see you soon, you’re next.”

Masvidal briefly creates space, but Covington is soon back to throwing elbows – this time in half-guard.

Masvidal gets free and looks to explode into space, but Covington exhibits terrific control and speed of movement to stay on top of the 37-year-old.
Masvidal is able to get up and end the round on his feet – as he did in the first two frames.

Covington once again has Masvidal against the fence and easily takes down his rival with a double-leg.
Little resistance from Masvidal, who is now on the wrong end of slicing elbows from Covington in “Gamebred”’s guard!

Covington grabs hold of Masvidal again but is caught with an elbow as they break! That cuts Covington.
He throws a high kick but is tripped at the same time. Masvidal tries to grapple with Covington on the mat, but it proves a poor decision; Covington takes the back again.
Credit to Masvidal for freeing himself, though! One-two to the body from “Gamebred”.
Covington is undeterred, however, throwing overhand punches from close range.
He then grabs Masvidal against the cage wall as the round ends.
A close range, which Masvidal might have even edged. *Might* have.

Round 2
Covington is given a warning for an accidental eye poke early in that first round. Referee Herb Dean was able to watch the incident on a monitor at the end of the opening round.
Covington sees a head kick blocked and slips in the process. Masvidal with another hard leg kick.
Masvidal lands a body kick. Covington stands with him a little longer then drives his rival to the fence and starts to work on a takedown.
Masvidal lands some nasty elbows to the head of Covington. Now the pair are separated and Covington is warned for a clear low blow in the grappling exchange.

Covington is alternating between the choke attempt and punches.
Masvidal bides his time and is ultimately able to stand with 30 seconds left in the round! Impressive stuff.
Body kick from Covington, who then lands a one-two at the end of the round.

Masvidal runs forward and throws a jumping front kick that misses. “Colby” chants from the crowd.
Covington with some straight punches. Masvidal with a heavy leg kick that seems to hurt Covington’s lead leg...
Covington charges forward with wild overhand punches and gets Masvidal against the fence. He shoots for and secures the takedown.
Masvidal is back on his feet but still in Covington’s grasp. “Chaos” drags Masvidal down to the mat again and looks to take the back... He’s looking for a rear naked choke...
