Gauff cruises past Dolehide, Raducanu beats Zarazua

Emma Raducanu is back at Wimbledon today and faces Elise Mertens for a place in the third round at SW19, after it was confirmed that she will play alongside Andy Murray in the mixed doubles.

Murray was forced to pull out of his final singles match at the Championships after ruling that he had not recovered from a back operation in time. The two-time champion will play in the men’s doubles alongside brother Jamie on Thursday but his on-court swansong will continue in the mixed doubles alongside Raducanu, the former US Open champion.

Elsewhere today, Carlos Alcaraz, who raced into the second round to begin his title defence on Monday, now skips over to No.1 Court to play Australian Aleksandar Vukic. World No.1 Jannik Sinner is back today, too, in an all-Italian affair with former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, while Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka are also scheduled to take to court.

Chris Eubanks down a break early against Quentin Halys

Chris Eubanks was down a break early in his Court 11 match against Halys, a qualifier from France.

The American took Wimbledon by storm last year, beating Cam Norrie on the way to the quarter-finals and locking up a place in SW19’s ‘Last 8 Club’ which means Eubanks gets free tickets for life.

He’ll hope to get back on track after the early weather delay.

On this day in 2011: Novak Djokovic wins first Wimbledon title

Novak Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title with a stunning victory over Rafael Nadal on this day in 2011.

Djokovic triumphed 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3 to end Nadal's reign as Wimbledon men's champion and become the first Serbian to win the crown.

"It's really hard to describe this with any words except as the best day of my life, the most special day of my life," said Djokovic, who was so overcome with emotion that he knelt down and ate some of the Centre Court grass. "This is my favourite tournament, the tournament I always dreamed of winning, the first tournament I ever watched in my life.

"I think I'm still sleeping, I'm still having my dream. I think I played probably my best match on the grass courts ever."

Djokovic, who overtook Nadal as world number one with victory, overcame a slightly edgy start to take a stranglehold on proceedings.

He won his first break point of the day at 5-4 and dominated the second set before defending champion Nadal fought back in the third. But it was a false dawn for the Spaniard as Djokovic broke at 4-3 and held serve to take the title. Djokovic has gone on to win Wimbledon a further six times in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 as part of his record 24 grand slam men's singles titles.

Ons Jabeur dreaming of third straight Wimbledon final

Tunisian 10th seed Ons Jabeur said she is dreaming of reaching a third straight Wimbledon final this month and that managing the negative emotions would be a key factor in getting to the title decider.

Jabeur, who lost the 2022 final to Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina and the 2023 title match to Czech Marketa Vondrousova, got her latest grasscourt Grand Slam campaign off to a good start with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Japan's Moyuka Uchijima.

“If I make it a third year in a row to the final, that would be like a dream," the 29-year-old told reporters on Tuesday.

"I know I have a big capacity of doing it, I’ve been working on myself a lot. I can see myself winning this tournament hopefully."

Jabeur said she has to keep control of her emotions on court if this is going to be her year at Wimbledon.

"I always try to remember that this is the place where I belong, where I play amazing and where I feel amazing," she told The National.

"So I’m just going to enjoy every moment that I’m here at Wimbledon and hopefully it will be the right year.

"For me, the most important thing is to know how to manage my feelings, especially when I really need them and sometimes I try to be less tough with myself, because that’s not great as well."

Emma Raducanu pays tribute to Andy Murray and hopes compatriot extends career

"What I know of him, how I know him a little bit, he loves tennis and the sport, the challenges that come with it,” Raducanu told Sky Sports.

“He doesn't care what people say about him. He loves doing what he does. For him to finally let go of tennis, I just don't see it happening.

“I'd be happy if he played for a long time to come, but physically it's such a demanding sport. I want to see him go on for as long as possible.”

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon farewell will include an appearance in the mixed doubles alongside Emma Raducanu, with Britain’s two grand slam champions entering the draw as wildcards
