Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Roger Federer returns to Centre Court on Tuesday as he opens his Wimbledon 2019 campaign with a match against South African youngster Lloyd Harris.

Elsewhere, new World No 1 Ashleigh Barty will begin proceedings on Court No 1 with a match against Saisai Zheng.

Back on serve at 5-4.
Sugita 3-6 1-6 1-1 Nadal*
Excellent opening service game from Sugita, with his serve and forehand combination not giving Rafa any chance there.
One game apiece.
*Sugita 3-6 1-6 1-2 Nadal
Four points, four serves, two aces, two returns out of play.
Simple, efficient, grass court tennis. Very 'un-Rafa' like.
On serve in the third...
Sugita 3-6 1-6 2-2 Nadal*
Sugita holds to love, and is matching Rafa at the moment, even wowing the crowd with a drop shot/passing shot combination...
*Sugita 3-6 1-6 2-3 Nadal
Once again, Sugita unable to do any damage to Nadal there, the Spaniard running away with the game to love in double-quick time.

GAME, SET, MATCH SERENA WILLIAMS! Williams def. Gatto-Monticone 6-2 7-5
Serena gets it done before the tiebreak, and the seven-time champion is safely through to the second round!
Sugita 3-6 1-6 3-3 Nadal*
Another solid hold from Sugita, who took control of his own destiny from 30-30 by attacking Nadal, and was rewarded.
Nothing to choose between them so far in this set.
