From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Simona Halep beat Serena Williams to win her first Wimbledon final with a stunning performance in straight sets.

The omens had looked good for the American, who has won nine of the 10 previous meetings between these two, but Halep said she is "stronger mentally" than she has been in previous meetings and proved that on Centre Court.

The result showed Halep's all-round talents after claiming last year's French Open on clay. Follow updates from the match in the live blog below:

Last five meetings

2019 Williams d Halep 6-1 4-6 6-4 (Australian Open, hard)

2016 Williams d Halep 6-2 4-6 6-3 (U.S. Open, hard)

2016 Williams d Halep 6-4 6-3 (Indian Wells, hard)

2015 Williams d Halep 6-3 7-6(5) (Cincinnati, hard)

2015 Williams d Halep 6-2 4-6 7-5 (Miami, hard)

*Williams 1-5 Halep

Halep holds, and what a way to seal it!

A forehand-angled winner - she fist pumps towards her box, who are on their feet!

Williams, after just 20 minutes, will serve to stay in the first set.

Williams 2-5 Halep*

A second love hold in a row for Williams, as Halep can't quite return in play.

Still, she doesn't need to worry about that... the Romanian will have at least two chances to serve for the first set!

Opportunity number one coming up...

Williams 2-5 Halep* (40-15)

Unreal defence from Halep!

Williams looks to have won two points from 15-15, but some stunning retrievals from the Romanian means it's TWO SET POINTS!

Williams 2-5 Halep* (40-30)

Serena saves the first - forehand return winner.

There was some frustration in that!

*Williams 2-6 Halep

SIMONA HALEP WINS THE FIRST SET!

This time, Williams' aggressive return flies wide and it's the perfect start for Halep in her first Wimbledon final, 6-2!

Plenty to ponder for Serena Williams, who I remind you is chasing a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title.

My god Serena is pumped up now!

She lets out a huge scream after winning two points from 0-15, but then overhits a dolly at 30-15! Too fired up? Perhaps.

*Williams 2-6 0-0 Halep (40-30)

A calmer forehand down the line has too much for Halep. GAME POINT.

Kieran Jackson13 July 2019 14:40

Williams 2-6 1-0 Halep*

Williams holds, as Halep's forehand on the run is a tad long.

Serena has her nose in front...

Williams 2-6 1-0 Halep* (30-30)

More even now. Both players make a couple of errors, 2 points each.
