Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow the latest updates live from day three at Wimbledon where the draw for the mixed doubles takes place, with Andy Murray and Serena Williams team up in one of the all-time great ‘dream teams’.

But preliminary talks of an incredible partnership with 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams developed into a genuine proposition, and it was announced on Tuesday that they ill team up in an attempt to win the mixed doubles.

Murray and Williams needed to commit to the tournament by 11am, with the draw getting underway at midday. Follow the live action below.

COURT 2 RESULT

STAN WAWRINKA IS OUT! Reilly Opelka comes through in 3 hours and 13 minutes, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 8-6!

Wawrinka's miserable form at Wimbledon continues - it'll be Opelka who will play in the third round on Friday.

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 14:29

Huge scalp for Reilly Opelka, here's his moment of victory:

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 14:39

While Kontaviet came through against Watson, David Goffin is also through to the third round, after a 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 win against Jeremy Chardy.

Grass courts are a great leveller:

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 14:55

Edmund 5-4 Verdasco* (40-40)

From 15-40 to deuce, as Verdasco leaves the door ajar... Edmund anticipates Verdasco's forehand put-away, and hits a backhand winner into the open court.

This would be a turn-up, deuce.

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 15:08

Edmund 5-4 Verdasco* (40-40)

A strong Edmund return gives him SET POINT, and it looks like Edmund has wrapped it up with an inside-out forehand, but Verdasco strikes back a bullet forehand down the line which Edmund can't get back into play.

SET POINT SAVED! Edmund thought he nicked it there...

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 15:10

Edmund 5-4 Verdasco* (Ad Edmund)

After saving a game point with a superb forehand cross-court pass, Verdasco hits out of court and it's SET POINT NO.2!

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 15:11

Edmund 6-4 Verdasco*

KYLE EDMUND WINS THE FIRST SET!

Verdasco goes long, and out of nowhere, Edmund has stolen the first set!

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 15:13

Edmund 6-4 0-1 Verdasco*

VERDASCO BREAKS!

Trouble early on for Edmund, as he hits a forehand wide to bring up TWO BREAK POINTS, and the Spaniard takes it straight away, with Edmund's forehand clipping the net and landing astray.

Kieran Jackson3 July 2019 15:21

*Edmund 6-4 1-1 Verdasco

EDMUND BREAKS BACK!

Verdasco's forehand goes astray at 30-30, and then he DOUBLE FAULTS!

Deary me, a sucker punch that for Verdasco.
