The Australian Open has seen its biggest shock so far as 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien stunned three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev in a five-set epic to reach the third round on his grand slam debut outside of the United States.

Tien completely outplayed Medvedev over the first couple of hours to take a commanding lead but the fifth seed saved match point in the third-set tiebreak as the contest went the distance, late into the night in Melbourne.

But the qualifier held his nerve and outlasted Medvedev in the final set tiebreak to win 6-3 7-6 6-7 1-6 7-6 (10-7) in the biggest match of his life, adding another major upset to a tournament that is witnessing a breakthrough of exciting young talent.

Tien’s victory against the former World No 1 and US Open champion was the biggest upset yet and came after four and 49 minutes, with the match finishing at almost 3am local time.

Earlier, British No 1 Katie Boulter could not progress to the third round for the first time as Veronika Kudermetova edged a tight contest. Boulter looked to have found the momentum, but Kudermetova raised her level in the decider, winning 7-6 2-6 6-2.

Emma Raducanu defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-5 but battled more injury problems during the victory. The 22-year-old played through pain struggling with her lower back, but Raducanu is hoping it’s just a “small niggle” after her preparations for the tournament were disrupted by back spasms.

Five-time grand slam winner Swiatek needed just one hour to cruise through, setting up a blockbuster match against Raducanu, who she is yet to drop a set against in three meetings.

Australian Open: SET! Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 Learner Tien

AMAZING! The 19-year-old Learner Tien steers a forehand winner down the line to take a two-set lead over Daniil Medvedev!

What a story this could be. Tien, on his grand slam debut, leads the former World No 1 and US Open champion.

Medvedev is angry and clearly out of sorts. But Tien has stepped up the occasion and stands on the brink of a major shock.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-6 Learner Tien

This match is getting very weird! Medvedev receives a double foot-fault, costing him the point! Tien then puts away the winner to move 4-2 ahead.

Medvedev is furious and goes right up to a line judge, saying something into his face. But foot faults are measured electronically....

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-6 Learner Tien

Another break of serve! Medvedev hands on and Tien gets a little tight, especially on the overhead.

Onto a tiebreak we go. Tien’s level just looks to be higher, though, and the American wins an epic 45-shot rally to move 2-0 ahead in the tiebreak!

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 5-6 Learner Tien*

Incredible from Learner Tien! He breaks Daniil Medvedev again, and moves a game away from taking a two-set lead!

The lefty leans into a backhand and powers it down the lead to increase Medvedev’s frustration. His serve is being gobbled up time and time again.

But Tien is finding holding serve tough, too. Can he get over the line to take a big lead?

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 5-4 Learner Tien

Medvedev levels after another break of serve and then manages to hold for the first time in four games.

Medvedev should be able to get out of trouble in this match but Tien looks to be a super player.

It always becomes a bit different, though, when the qualifier or wildcard actually takes the lead against a top seed.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-4 Learner Tien

Wow! The phenomenal Learner Tien breaks Daniil Medvedev for the third game in a row, to take the lead in the second set!

The 19-year-old wins a brilliant exchange at the net and then produces a stunning backhand lob to leave Medvedev stranded.

Medvedev launches his racket and receives a code violation (although he basically skimmed it along the court to avoid hitting anyone).

But this is sensational from Learner Tien. A set and a break up against the former World No 1.

Unreal scenes as Danielle Collins blows kisses to a booing crowd after beating the Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava in three sets.

The American responded to the crowd by holding a hand to her ear and blowing kisses to the sound of even more boos on the Margaret Court Arena.

Australian Open: Jannik Sinner through to third round

Jannik Sinner is asked by John McEnroe how he manages to handle his emotions and control himself on court.

Sinner laughs and replies, “I think we are different, me and you!”

“Everyone has their own mentality and I’m quite happy with my one.”

Without wanting to land himself in trouble with McEnroe, Sinner laughs: “I think we should end this here.”
