The Australian Open has seen its biggest shock so far as 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien stunned three-time finalist Daniil Medvedev in a five-set epic to reach the third round on his grand slam debut outside of the United States.

Tien completely outplayed Medvedev over the first couple of hours to take a commanding lead but the fifth seed saved match point in the third-set tiebreak as the contest went the distance, late into the night in Melbourne.

But the qualifier held his nerve and outlasted Medvedev in the final set tiebreak to win 6-3 7-6 6-7 1-6 7-6 (10-7) in the biggest match of his life, adding another major upset to a tournament that is witnessing a breakthrough of exciting young talent.

Tien’s victory against the former World No 1 and US Open champion was the biggest upset yet and came after four and 49 minutes, with the match finishing at almost 3am local time.

Earlier, British No 1 Katie Boulter could not progress to the third round for the first time as Veronika Kudermetova edged a tight contest. Boulter looked to have found the momentum, but Kudermetova raised her level in the decider, winning 7-6 2-6 6-2.

Emma Raducanu defeated Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-5 but battled more injury problems during the victory. The 22-year-old played through pain struggling with her lower back, but Raducanu is hoping it’s just a “small niggle” after her preparations for the tournament were disrupted by back spasms.

Five-time grand slam winner Swiatek needed just one hour to cruise through, setting up a blockbuster match against Raducanu, who she is yet to drop a set against in three meetings.

I cannot believe that Tien is still going. He takes a shot from Medvedev, that may have been drifting wide, and catches it on the full volley to crush the backhand winner.

3-2 up.

He tries to run around Medvedev’s second serve but this time can’t find the winner.

INSANE!!!!!!! Tien does it! He makes the return from about a mile off the court, and then steps in to thrash the backhand winner.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 7-6 6-1 5-5 Learner Tien*

Ridiculous. About 20 or so ball-kids, who have had to stay on site due to the late finish, are now having to dry the court with beach towels.

But they have managed. We’re back underway, although that five minute delay or so could not have been ideal.

You’re kidding! It’s raining! Play is stopped!!!

At 5-5 15-15 in the fifth set, at 2:30 in the morning!

It’s not a torrential downpour or anything, he players are staying on the court, but the court is getting wet

This is going to lead to a stoppage, for sure.

Australian Open: Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 7-6 6-1 5-5 Learner Tien*

30-30 on the Medvedev serve, with Tien two points from victory and the fifth seed two away from defeat, Medvedev produces an astonishing behind the back volley to stay alive.

Had he got that wrong, it would have been match point.

It’s followed by a 27-point rally, which Medvedev finishes by whacking an incredible backhand volley winner.

He survives.

Australian Open: *Daniil Medvedev 3-6 6-7 7-6 6-1 4-5 Learner Tien

Medvedev blitzes the hold of serve, landing three quick points in a row to immediately throw it back to Tien.

The rallies are all now being played on Tien’s service games - but the 19-year-old comes up with back-to-back forehand winners.

TIen is crushing his left-handed forehand and it helps him to a massive hold of serve. He moves a game away.
