From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Novak Djokovic is the 2019 Australian Open champion after crushing Rafael Nadal in a surprisingly one-sided men's final in Melbourne.

The world No 1 and world No 2 met for the 53rd time but there was only ever one winner at Melbourne Park as the Serb exploded out of the blocks and won going away 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 after breaking the Spaniard's serve five times and only facing one break point himself. The victory, a seventh Down Under, moves him one clear of Roger Federer as the most decorated male player in the tournament's history.

Here's how it all played out:

Nadal: "Many congratulations to Novak, well done to your team."

"Many thanks to Tennis Australia and Kia."

"There is not one tournament in the world which is improving as much as this - it is probably the best in the world."

Kieran Jackson27 January 2019 11:08

Nadal: "Novak played a lot better then me tonight."

"It's been a long year, I've had to retire in nine events, and since the US Open I wasn't able to play a professional match until the Australian Open."

"I really believe I played a good two weeks of tennis, thank you to my team and family. After all the things that happened to me in my career, I wouldn't be there without their support."

Kieran Jackson27 January 2019 11:09

Nadal: "I'm going to keep fighting hard.

"This tournament has been tough for me with injuries and opponents like tonight!"

"I can't thank the fans enough over the two weeks. The connection with all of you is difficult to describe and I really hope to see you next year!"

Djokovic now receives the trophy from Ivan Lendl, as he is announced as the "King of Rod Laver Arena."

Djokovic: "I would like to give complements to Rafa's couple of weeks.

"You came back from an injury, but you're showing to me and many other players a definition of fighting spirit and resilience."
