Fly-half Bernard Foley kicked 11 points for Australia in a tense 16-15 autumn international victory over Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday as Blair Kinghorn missed a last-minute penalty to claim a win for the home side.

Depleted Scotland had been seeking an unprecedented fourth successive victory over Australia and managed two excellent tries through fullback Ollie Smith and Kinghorn, but the latter pulled his decisive penalty wide when he had the chance to win the game.

Australia have struggled so far in 2022 and were far from perfect but they relied on the boot of Foley to get them ahead in the final 10 minutes. Captain James Slipper crossed for their only try.

Scotland host Fiji next Saturday, while Australia return to their training base in France and will face their hosts in Paris.

Blair Kinghorn misses crucial penalty as Australia snatch dramatic win at Scotland

Glen Young’s second-half yellow card proved pivotal as Australia came from behind to defeat Scotland 16-15 in a dramatic Autumn Test at Murrayfield.

The Scots looked on course for a fourth consecutive victory over the Wallabies when they led 15-6 after a couple of excellent tries from Ollie Smith and Blair Kinghorn.

But the sin-binning of Edinburgh lock Young on his first Murrayfield appearance allowed Australia a much-needed foothold and they managed to turn the game in their favour in the closing quarter.

Kinghorn, playing at number 10 following Gregor Townsend’s contentious decision not to include Finn Russell in the squad, could have won it for Scotland at the end but sent a penalty agonisingly wide.

Jamie Ritchie: “I’m proud of the boys. We fought really hard for that. We have an opportunity to win it at the end and we need to rally around Blair. Unfortunately he didn’t make the kick but that’s not his fault. We had opportunities earlier in the game. We will be back next week.

“Discipline is something we speak about. We need to bounce back and be cleaner in our discipline.”

It wasn’t just the missed penalty at the end, though. Scotland were in a position to beat Australia but simply gave away too many penalties and made too many errors in the second half.

I can’t believe it! Kinghorn has pulled it wide!

78 mins: That gets Scotland downfield, and it’s followed by a penalty! It’s on Australia’s Taniela Tupou for not releasing, and was needless. Scotland play on with the advantage but it comes back when Ritchie throws forward. Kinghorn will kick for the posts, most probably for the win!

76 mins; Scotland make a key turnover and look to turn defence in attack as Kinghorn carries. He looked to beat a man and then pass wide to Van der Merwe, but it is knocked on by Hunter Paisami. It’s being checked for a yellow card, but there was cover behind. Scotland still get the penalty.

73 mins: Scotland are able to get back on the ball as Darcy Graham gets a rare touch, trying to bring it out from the backline. Australia look comfortable though and recover possession after Scotland clear.

PENALTY! Scotland 15-16 Australia (Foley 71’)

Foley kicks Australia ahead once more, and Scotland can only have themselves to blame. Ten minutes to go to put things right.
