Eddie Jones happy with England settling for draw

England burgled an outrageous 25-25 draw from New Zealand after being out of the running for most of the match, a late brace from Will Stuart helping them to a result which will nonetheless do little to quieten coach Eddie Jones’s critics.

Flanker Dalton Papali’i opened the scoring for New Zealand after just four minutes, appearing to read an English strike play off the tail of their lineout and intercepting Jack van Poortvliet’s pass to run 45 metres untouched. They added a second minutes later, Codie Taylor bundling over from a lineout after England were penalised at the scrum, and the hosts were in bad shape at 0-14 down inside ten minutes.

With England’s attack misfiring all day while New Zealand were for the most part clinical, adding a third through Rieko Ioane, it took until the final 10 minutes for some encouragement for the fractious home fans.

With seemingly nothing to lose, England exploded out of nowhere, Marcus Smith skipping through a gap to set up a close-range Stuart try and Freddie Steward rounding off a free-flowing attack to add another. The Twickenham crowd were delirious when Stuart went over again in the final minute, with Smith converting to complete a remarkable comeback.

Ireland 3-0 Australia, 46 mins

The lack of hooker costs Australia as they try a short one but it’s crooked. Who said lineout throwing was easy?

Ireland scrum, uncontested of course, in the 22.

Ireland 3-0 Australia, 45 mins

Australia clear but it’s a lineout midway in the Wallabies half for Ireland. This is a good platform.

Ryan claims it in the air and the maul moves towards the 22 before Ireland go down the blindside as Gibson-Park darts but Hansen has a foot in touch as he gets tackled. Poor option really.

Ireland 3-0 Australia, 44 mins

Ireland looking more explosive in attack already in this second half. Sheehan finds a neat offload out the back door and successive carries get over the gain line. Into the Aussie 22 again.

They go wide to the right and Hansen has half a yard but it’s pulled back for a knock-on from O’Mahony in contact. Scrum Australia but they’re currently hooker-less with Porecki off for a HIA and Fainga’a in the sin-bin.

It will be an uncontested scrum, although the Wallabies also have to bring on Taniela Tupou into the front row to complete it. The rules state two men have to go off, so for the next two minutes they’re actually down to 13

Ireland 3-0 Australia, 42 mins

Ireland with the ball first in this second half and they’re quickly into the Australia 22 as McCloskey wins his collision to get over the gain line.

Crowley’s inside pass almost frees Hansen but the Wallabies come up with the steal - Michael Hooper, who else, gets his hand in and pulls the ball back!

Foley spanks the ball clear up beyond halfway. That was better from Ireland even though it ended frustratingly.

KICK-OFF! Ireland 3-0 Australia

40 minutes of rugby left today. Ireland lead by three points and Australia will have about 7 minutes with 14 men after Fainga’a sin-binning.

WATCH: Tadhg Furlong shows off his kicking skills

Not much by the way of first-half highlights. This is probably about it to be honest but who doesn’t love to see a prop kicking at least!

HALF-TIME! Ireland 3-0 Australia

Wallabies go short from the lineout, recycle the ball and White kicks the ball into the stands.

Not exactly high scoring in Dublin but Ireland do have a narrow lead and Australia have spurned so many opportunities. You’d think the Irish will come on strong in the second half.

Ireland 3-0 Australia, 39 mins

Lineout secured and the maul is on! Dan Sheehan goes for the corner but he’s millimetres short with Nic White underneaht him. Not sure how he’s stayed in there?

Ah, Gibson-Park’s foot is just in touch as he fishes the ball out. Wallabie lineout on their own five-metre line but we’re past 40 minutes, so they just need to secure this and kick it out.

Ireland 3-0 Australia, 39 mins

Nice run by O’Brien and inside pass to Hansen brings Ireland up to the Australia 22. They’ve spent just 17 seconds in there so far in the match...

Gibson-Park wins Ireland a soft penalty and they turn down the three points to kick to the corner instead and test out the 14-man Wallabies just before half-time.

YELLOW CARD! Ireland 3-0 AUSTRALIA (Fainga’a, 37 mins)

Another neck roll by Australia - Folau Fainga’a on Josh van der Flier. The ref has warned both sides about going high but again the Wallabies err and he loses patience, it’s a yellow card for the hooker.

With their other hooker, Dave Porecki, in HIA, it will be interesting to see how the visitors cope
