Winger Henry Arundell scored five tries as England tore up the safety-first playbook from their first two matches at the Rugby World Cup in a crushing 71-0 defeat of Chile on Saturday to hand coach Steve Borthwick a selection quandary.
England, who made 12 changes from the starting lineup against Japan, scored 11 unanswered tries, including the five for 20-year-old winger Arundell, equalling an England record, albeit against the lowest ranked team in the tournament who are playing at their first World Cup.
The changes included captain Owen Farrell returning from suspension but arguably it was another flyhalf, Marcus Smith, starting for the first time at fullback, who stole the limelight, with flashes of the spontaneous touches England have missed in past matches. Capping his efforts was his kick-through and impressive acceleration to touch down in the first half.
Chile also came wanting to play an open game but after a see-saw first 20 minutes they were largely on the back foot, with a malfunctioning line-out.
The victory means England have taken a decisive stride towards the quarter-finals. They top Pool D on 14 points after three victories and can only be denied a knockout berth if they lose to Samoa and results conspire to produce a three-way tie, when points difference would be decisive.

England 31-0 Chile
41 min: We are back under way in Lille. Chile kick and concede an immediate penalty at the maul.
Half-time: England 31-0 Chile
England’s five tries, in pictures (I really like the fan who has just got back from the bathroom in time to see try No 2):
Half-time: England 31-0 Chile
From our reporter Harry Latham-Coyle in Lille:
"It took a while for the first try to come but you feel the dam has well and truly burst now. There's space aplenty out wide for England, whose pacey backline have the extra fizz required to make the most of it. Two tight five forwards have been among their best, though - Theo Dan has had a few intelligent injections in phase play and one a turnover, while George Martin has been cleaning things up rather well, collecting that ill-advised Chilean offload before Marcus Smith's score and earlier making a crucial cover tackle to stop a South American streaking free."
Half-time: England 31-0 Chile
Owen Farrell adds the extras from the touchline and that’s three from five kicks for the fly half. The half-time whistle blows and England will be pretty happy with that, despite a slow start.
Try! England 29-0 Chile (Smith)
Brilliant, this, by Marcus Smith. England snatch the ball in the middle of the field and spread it to the makeshift full back, who charges down the left wing, grubbers, collects the bouncing ball and sprints over the line. A great try.
England 24-0 Chile
39 min: Chile secure the ball from the lineout and try to maul their way forwards, but England halt their progress, and they will have a scrum deep in defensive territory.
England 24-0 Chile
37 min: Chile earn a penalty – a mistake by Jack Willis who was ahead of kicker Marcus Smith – and the ball is booted to touch near England’s 22 for a Chilean lineout.
Try! England 24-0 Chile (Rodd)
34 min: A tough 10 minutes or so for Chile as the dam finally broke, and it’s just got worse as prop Bevan Rodd batters through a couple of tacklers and rolls over the line. That’s try number four and a bonus point secured. Farrell makes the kick.
Try! England 17-0 Chile (Arundell)
29 min: The two try-scorers combine and England have a quick third! Chile weren’t ready for a tap-and-go close to their own line, Theo Dan takes the ball forwards drawing a couple of defenders, and when he passes to Henry Arundell the space is open again to touch down over the line in the corner.
Farrell misses the conversion.
Try! England 12-0 Chile (Dan)
25 min: England immediately go on the attack looking for another try and they find it after forcing Chile back to their own line, as hooker Theo Dan picks up at the ruck and dives over for a simple score. Farrell just makes the kick this time, and his World Cup is up and running.
