Cheltenham Gold Cup preview from The Independent's racing correspondent Sam Turner

Galopin Des Champs was denied a historic third successive Cheltenham Gold Cup as Inothewayurthinkin triumphed in the race of the week.

With history on the line, Galopin Des Champs, Paul Townend and Willie Mullins were denied by a sensational ride as jockey Mark Walsh marshalled the Gavin Patrick Cromwell-trained seven-year-old to an emphatic win.

“I'm dancing inside,” said Walsh. “I can't believe it. He jumped well, just missed the ditch. Paul [Townend on Galopin Des Champs] was on my outside and early on, he missed a few fences and I just thought he wasn't happy. This boy [Inothewayurthinkin] has had to grow up over the last year. Gavin Cromwell is a genius having him spot on for today. I'm delighted.”

On a day of upsets with plenty of other fascinating contests, the 100/1 shot Poniros pulled off the biggest shock of the week by winning the JCB Triumph Hurdle in the opening race of the day, while the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle saw another Mullins-Townend triumph with Jasmin De Vaux taking victory.

Cheltenham Festival tips: Gold Cup odds, experts’ best bets and 13 horses to watch on day four

The Cheltenham Festival is back, and neither snow nor rain will keep the horses from running. Races continue as we gear up for the weekend, with one of the most hotly anticipated races of the event coming in the shape of Friday evening’s Gold Cup, where Galopin Des Champs is eyeing up a history-making third title. He would be just the fifth horse to manage the feat.

Day three was not short of entertainment as Bob Olinger took an unlikely win in the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle and rank outsider Air Of Entitlement was first over the line in the day’s opening race.

Inside the battle against drunken disorder during Cheltenham Festival – and how police are winning

It's gone 10.30pm, more than four hours since Daily Present snatched victory in the final race of St Patrick's Day at Cheltenham Festival, and the pubs in the town centre are alive with drunken revelry.

Along a pedestrianised strip squeezed between two packed bars, inebriated punters jostle in the cold as Irish music is blasted out when suddenly a scuffle breaks out.

Punches are thrown and two men are bundled out of Copa bar in front of passing police officers before one decides to make a quick getaway, fleeing on foot and appearing to get away from a chasing policeman.

‘£100 a ticket and toilets like a First World War latrine’ – Why racegoers are abandoning Cheltenham Festival

Cheltenham Festival is the showpiece event of the jumping season, and one of the few times a year when horse racing breaks into the consciousness of the public outside hardcore fans.

Attendances top 200,000 each year, but since record-breaking numbers descended on Prestbury Park in 2022 for the first post-pandemic edition, the crowds have steadily declined – and this year even more seem set on staying away.

Long-term National Hunt fan Jack Hawthorne is swerving this year’s Festival, and he’s not the only one.

“For years I used to go to Cheltenham, but I’m afraid the course has priced out several of us and it’s simply not enjoyable with all the crowds,” he said, repeating a sentiment that several racegoers told The Independent.

Overcrowding, expensive beer, and the exorbitant cost of attending the race are all putting off festival regulars this year
