Sweden face Canada in the final of the women’s football at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday, with the gold medal game taking place in Yokohama.

Both these nations picked up medals in Rio 2016, but neither got the gold they are both searching for this time around - Sweden took silver, Canada the bronze, both edged out by Germany along the way. One of them will be celebrating wildly come full-time on this occasion, however, with Sweden having overcome Japan and Australia to get back into the final, and Canada seeing off Brazil and United States en route to the Nissan Stadium showpiece event.

Team USA eventually took the bronze medal on Thursday after a thrilling seven-goal encounter with Australia, but now it’s all eyes on Sweden and Canada to see who triumphs as Olympic champions in Japan.

Follow all the team news and action between Sweden and Canada in the gold medal match at the Tokyo Olympics live below:

Tokyo 2020: Sweden 1-0 Canada

38’ mins

How will Canada react before the break? A cross from the right is easily claimed by Lindahl, the 38-year-old goalkeeper who is hoping to finally add a major international honour to her medal haul.

The Swedish goalkeeper has suffered semi-final or final heartache in the Euros twice, the World Cup twice and the Olympic Games in Rio - can she win gold this time? Just over 50 minutes to play.

Tokyo 2020: GOAL! Sweden 1-0 Canada

GOAL! 33’ mins

Appeals for handball against Quinn from the Sweden players, but nothing given by the referee. Sweden stay on the front foot though and a low ball from the right side is met by Stina Blackstenius in the middle of the box - and her low, first-time strike beats the keeper and rolls in for the opening goal! Sweden ahead just after the half-hour mark.

Tokyo 2020: Sweden 0-0 Canada

28’ mins

Yellow card for Beckie, first of the game. Canada still pushing on though, Sinclair again almost opening up the defence then Prince making a run which ends in an effort flying over the bar.

Up the other end a cross from the right is met by a fine header from Jakobsson - but Labbe dives away to her left to make a great fingertip save!

Tokyo 2020: Sweden 0-0 Canada

23’ mins

Good switch of play again from Canada, this time to Prince who has pulled out to the left of the box, but her curling, teasing ball into the box just evades Beckie and drifts a few yards wide of the far post. A better few minutes for the side in red.

Tokyo 2020: Sweden 0-0 Canada

18’ mins

First notable shot on goal and it’s Rolfo who curls one in the from the edge of the box, Labbe making a routine save away to her right.

At the other end of the pitch, Sinclair dribbles through the centre but doesn’t make her mind up quickly enough over which way to pass and she’s crowded out by two challenges.

Beckie then races into the corner and crosses, with Bjorn slicing her clearance over her own crossbar for a corner.

Tokyo 2020: Sweden 0-0 Canada

12’ mins

Eriksson lines up a strike from the left edge of the box and thunders it across the face of goal - and just wide of the far post. Quinn is fouled by Asllani, but Canada can’t make the most of the set-piece and they are just struggling to maintain possession in midfield at the moment.

A couple of corners from the right are well defended, veteran skipper Sinclair heading away the most recent one. Will she get the gold medal she wants so much today? Age 38, record goalscorer, over 300 caps...can’t say she hasn’t put the time and effort in to getting to this stage!

Tokyo 2020: Sweden 0-0 Canada

8’ mins

Canada’s first foray down the flanks sees Nichelle Prince flying down the right and winning a corner. Those split strikers will be vital for the North Americans, not just as a goal threat but an outlet for the defence and keeping Sweden’s midfielders from all supporting the front line.

The set-piece is met by Gilles, but she nods off-target.

Tokyo 2020: Sweden 0-0 Canada

4’ mins

Sweden making the early running, a few through balls for Blackstenius to chase down the channels and for Canada to defend. Already their diamond midfield making it tough for passing through the centre for the Swedes, who have been by far the more adventurous side throughout the Games.
