Great Britain are through to the knockout stages of the Olympics women’s football competition with a game to spare after a 1-0 victory over hosts Japan. It was a professional display in a contest they bossed, though not with outright control. Similar to their 2-0 victory over Chile, they won the most important passages and, again, it was Ellen White’s name on the scoresheet. That her three goals in two games have come from just five shots says as much about her effectiveness in front of goal as it does of how Team GB have not quite been at their creative best. Nevertheless, the first part of the job is done.

For Japan, their hopes of automatic qualification take a hit, especially after Canada beat Chile earlier in the day to move to four points, with a cushion of three in second. However, they can still make it through if they defeat the South Americans on Tuesday to move to four points and, thus, qualify as the best two of the three third-place sides.

Follow all the latest updates from the Olympics and the reaction from Japan against Great Britain here:

Adam Yates has been distanced a little from this group, without the support to make a concerted effort to catch them, and it looks like his medal challenge is over here. The leading pair are USA’s Brandon McNulty and Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz. I make McNulty the favourite of the two in a sprint finish, should it get to that point. Which it just might: they are 45 seconds clear of the rest and that gap is growing.

This is an explosive race. More attacks in this group, and now two riders have got away down the road: McNulty and Carapaz. The rest are playing around, no one willing to be the guy to put in the shift to catch them, and the result is that the leading duo have opened up a 30 second gap with 22km to go.

Meanwhile here’s Geraint Thomas after abandoning the race following that early crash:

There are 11 riders out in front: Woods (CAN), Van Aert (BEL), Pogacar (SLO), Carapaz (ECU), McNulty (USA), Bettiol (ITA), Uran (COL), Gaudi (FRA), Mollema (NED), Fuglsang (DEN), Kwiatkowski (POL).

However, don’t discount Great Britain just yet. Adam Yates is on their tail, about 15 seconds back down the road.

Canada’s Michael Woods attacks over the summit! The rest give chase...

We have a distinct lead group of six riders, but they are being hunted down by another four or so. They include Pogacar, Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz, Poland’s Michal Kwiatkowski, Italy’s Alberto Bettiol – and Wout van Aert is clinging on! Pogacar’s biggest dangerman will not be deterred. 33km to go and this bunch of around 10 riders are in pole position. It’s also worth pointed out they all look absolutely broken by this Mikuni climb.

Things really shaping up now. Pogacar (Slovenia), McNulty (USA) and Woods (Canada) have forged ahead and a small group are giving chase. Among them is Wout van Aert – if the brilliant Belgian can cling on he will be in a good position to win this.

Tadej Pogacar attacks! Brandon McNulty and Michael Woods give chase. Plenty more riders have been dropped. Spain’s Ion Izagirre, Denmark’s Kasper Asgreen, Australia’s Luke Durbridge, Colombia’s Nairo Quintana. Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel, Netherlands’ Tom Dumoulin.

Around 35km to go and the road has got seriously steep. This is the Mikuni Pass and arguably more horrible than the Fuji climb. It’s only 6km or so but it’s a punishing average gradient of over 10 per cent, and you only need to look at the riders’ faces to see that. Jerseys are unzipped and blowing in the wind, teeth are grimaced, and backsides are no longer in their seats.

The original breakaway has been swept up and the head of the race is now a large pack of maybe 60 riders. A few mini breaks form at the front but get closed down easily enough, and as they exit the speedway track back on to the road, we have a wide-open race on our hands. Riders are working in their teams with the Australians and Dutch prominent near the front, as are a strong Slovenia team containing Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar. 40km to go.
