Megan Rapinoe silences her critics by scoring twice as USA wins bronze

Brazil retained their Olympic football title with substitute Malcom scoring an extra-time winner in a 2-1 victory over Spain in Saturday’s men’s gold medal game.

After the game ended 1-1 following normal time, Malcom raced onto a diagonal ball from Antony and got the better of the hesitant Jesus Vallejo before driving the winner into the far corner to clinch gold for Brazil after their Rio 2016 triumph.

Brazil forward Richarlison had missed a 39th-minute penalty before the South Americans grabbed the lead on the stroke of half-time when a deep Claudinho cross was hooked back across the area by Dani Alves and Cunha brought the ball down to slot home.

Spain threatened little but got on level terms in the 61st minute when substitute Carlos Soler broke down the right and whipped a cross to the back post where Mikel Oyarzabal connected with a sweet left-foot volley that whistled past Santos.

The Spaniards hit the woodwork twice in the final five minutes of normal time before Malcom grabbed the glory for Brazil in the second period of extra time.

Relive the action below.

The celebrations begin for Brazil

After all those years waiting for success in the Olympics Brazil’s men’s football team have made it back-to-back gold medals. There’s flowing tears of joy and Dani Alves and Richarlison are draped in the national flags.

Brazil win Olympic gold

Over the course of the game Brazil were probably the better team. They created the best chances in the first half before Matheus Cunha opened the scoring and Richarlison missed a penalty.

Spain responded with a belting volley from Mikel Oyarzabal in the second half before Malcom sealed the win in extra time.

It was a cracking game and a brilliant result for Brazil. They take gold, Spain win silver and yesterday Mexico took home the bronze medals with their win over Japan.

GOAL! Brazil 2 - 1 Spain (Malcom, 108’)⚽️

108 mins: Huge goal! Brazil have the lead! Spain win a corner that Soler whips into the box. He doesn’t beat the first man and Bruno Guimaraes clears the ball. Brazil send it up to Antony who bombs forward on the counter attack before sending a diagonal ball across to Malcom. Malcom shifts the ball away from Juan Vallejo and sprints into the box. He sends his effort across goal and Unai Simon gets a touch. The ball loops up but still finishes in the back of the net! It’s a massive goal for Brazil.
