Lewis Hamilton has the chance to claw some ground back on Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in the battle for the 2016 Formula 1 championship as he starts the US Grand Prix from pole position at the Circuit of the Americas. Follow the latest here.

Lap 30: It's just got worse for Verstappen. He's crawling down the back straight and reports "an engine failure or something, there's something hitting the engine, the faster I drive the harder it hits".

He's trying to limp back to the pits, but is going incredibly slowly and decides to give it up as he pulls off the track. What a shame that is.

Lap 41: Ferrari are under investigation for releasing Raikkonen's car in an unsafe manner, which usually results in a heavy fine. However, Charlie Whiting has previously said that grid penalties could be introduced as a punishment, which would be really harsh on him.

Lap 46: Massa gets close to Sainz - too close! - and nearly runs into the back of the Toro Rosso with his front wheels completely locked up. That compromises him through the end of the lap, and look who's coming now. It's Alonso, and he fancies a slice of the action here.

Lap 48: This is looking ominous for Sainz, with both Massa and Alonso having DRS available. The saving Grace for Sainz is that the Toro Rosso is very quick in a straight line.

Lap 50: Just six laps to go, and barring any dramas (nobody mention Malaysia or engine) Lewis Hamilton will close the gap slightly on Nico Rosberg int he title battle. He could've done with Ricciardo maintaining second, and the gap between those two isn't really getting any smaller.

Lap 54: Ferrari are out in the pits for Vettel. Late drama? Doesn't look like it, as Vettel has an enormous lead over Sainz and it's essentially a free stop. McLaren tell Alonso to go get Sainz, but he's slightly gapped his compatriot.

Lap 55: Alonso is onto the back of Sainz with two laps remaining! Williams call in Massa with a front left puncture, although with a free pit stop due to the gap behind him, I wonder if that's a sneaky one to send a message to the stewards.

Chequered Flag: So Hamilton picks up the victory that reduces Rosberg's lead to 26 points, still more than a single race victory but crucially for the reigning world champion it's a step in the right direction.
