The Briton has been slowly cutting away at Nico Rosberg’s lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship and will need a pole if he is to have any chance of overtaking his Mercedes teammate on the final race of the season.
- Rosberg only needs to finish on the podium on Sunday to win the title
- Hamilton is 12 points adrift of Mercedes teammate and rival Rosberg
- It will be Jenson Button’s final qualifying session as he retires from the sport

Hamilton goes quicker than in Q1 with a lap of 1:39.382 while Rosberg crosses two tenths of a second slower.Raikkonen and Vettel make up the top four so far.
The Red Bulls are going out on the soft tyres while the rest of the field are all on the ultra soft tyres. Will the tactic work?
The Red Bulls have done well on the super softs and they're in fourth and sixth. Ricciardo, who is in sixth, has a decision to make. Has he done enough?
A poor first lap from Button and he is all the way down in 16th. His teammate isn't faring much better and he has pitted in 11th place.
Massa is in the top ten at the moment in what is his final Grand Prix, while the two Force Indias are in seventh and eighth.
All the teams have now pitted with four minutes remaining. How many will go back out though?
Interestingly, Verstappen has gone back out but on ultra softs rather than the super softs he was on for his last lap. Ricciardo is also back out there.
The chequered flag is out and Bottas has dropped out of the top 10. Button improves but is only in 12th and Alonso has squeezed into Q3 in 10th place!
Bottas, Button, Gutierrez, Grosjean, Palmer and Wehrlein are all eliminated in Q2. That is Button's final qualifying lap in a Formula 1 car. He will start the Grand Prix in 12th place tomorrow.
