Shane Lowry captured the imagination of his Irish fans with a stunning victory to win The Open Championship and clinch his first major title.

The 32-year-old hails from Clara some 160 miles south of Royal Portrush across the border, and enjoyed a passionate and ferocious support from a partisan crowd who roared him home from start to finish amid one of the greatest atmospheres ever witnessed in Open history.

Only on the first hole did Lowry look in trouble as he began his round with a bogey, giving Tommy Fleetwood a sniff of a challenge, but from there on no one was able to get close to the Irishman and he eventually held off his English playing partner to claim a six-shot victory and spark wild celebrations on the 18th green.

Fleetwood clinched his joint-best finish in a major but rued what could have been after failing to take his chances early on, while Tony Finau rose through the leaderboard with a supreme par round of 71 in tdreadful conditions to take third place. Re-live the action below.

18th hole

Three pairings are still out on the course. The first is that of Rickie Fowler and Justin Rose. Rickie (-5) finishes off with a par on the last after making bogey on the previous hole. Rose (-1) has struggled today, but a par for him as well keeps him in the red for the week.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 17:51

17th hole

Lowry (-15) finds the front of the green in two, Fleetwood (-9) manages to get his ball to the back right. Both will have birdie putts but it matters not. Shane Lowry's name is being etched into the Claret Jug as we speak.

Was this the moment Shane Lowry knew he has it in the bag?

Michael Jones21 July 2019 17:54

17th hole

Fleetwood's playing for second place now, his third shot finishes about four feet from the hole. Lowry (-15) goes for it with his birdie, misses by an inch or so to the right and taps in for par.

Tommy tidies up to stay at (-9) with one hole to go.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 17:56

18th hole

Brooks Koepka (-6) finishes things off with a par on the last. He posts a round of 74 to tie with Lee Westwood in fourth place. His playing partner JB Holmes (+16) has had probably his worst round ever He cards a round of 87, 16-over par.

18th hole

In the fairway for both Shane Lowry (-15) and Tommy Fleetwood (-9) off the tee as they come down the last. Tommy plays his second shot first and finds the green just past the hole. Lowry targets the flag and reaches the green safely.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 18:04

18th hole

The fairway is opened up for the fans as they sprint to get as close as possible to the green Shane Lowry takes in the adulation as the crowd, sings and cheers for him. The smile on his face is wide and grinning. Lowry raises a closed fist and the crowd goes wild again.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 18:07

18th hole

Finally the fans quit down and Fleetwood (-9) can take his putt. He knocks it close and taps it in for a par to leave the stage for free for Shane Lowry.

A round of 74 with two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey is enough to give him second place at The Open.

Michael Jones21 July 2019 18:09

18th hole

Lowry (-15) rolls his putt so, so close for birdie but has to settle for a par. He taps it in and the crowd goes nuts. His wife Wendy and daughter Iris come and give him hugs, an embrace with Tommy Fleetwood is followed by more hugs from his mum and dad.

Shane Lowry is the 148th Open Champion and the Champion Golfer of the Year 2019.
