Your support makes all the difference.Follow the latest updates live from the Spanish Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton starts from pole position in his Formula One championship battle with Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen, who is bidding for his second consecutive victory.
It was Verstappen who dominated at Silverstone last weekend to take Red Bull’s first win of the season, and with Mercedes concerned that the tyre issues that struck them at the two British rounds will reappear in Barcelona, he is best placed to challenge Hamilton as he starts third on the grid behind Bottas.
Verstappen is Hamilton’s nearest challenger in the championship standings with a 30-point margin at the top of the table, and another Red Bull win would really open up the title battle. Behind Verstappen, the returning Sergio Perez leads a Racing Point one-two with Lance Stroll, with Alex Albon sixth and the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel disappointing once again in ninth and 11th. Lap 35: Vettel gets the message we all want to hear...
"We are expecting rain after lap 50."
Lap 37: Leclerc spins and he's beached at the penultimate corner! He reports the engine stopped on him, and replays show it just locked on him. Could this be a safety car ... but he gets it reset and gets going again.
Lap 39: Leclerc is still going, which is bizarre as that looked to be a complete engine failure on him. He's running last, 17s behind 19th-placed Latifi, but he is at least still in the race.
Lap 40 standings
1. Hamilton
2. Verstappen +9.5s
3. Bottas +11.4s
4. Stroll +62.8s
5. Perez +64.4s
6. Sanz +65.8s
7. Gasly +69.7s
8. Norris +71.0s
9. Albon +74.5s
10. Kvyat +77.9s
Lap 41: Leclerc and Albon both pit, and it's for different reasons. Albon swaps the hard tyres - which really haven't worked - and goes onto the mediums, while Leclerc comes in to have his seatbelts done up, only to retire from the race with that engine issue that has proven terminal.
Lap 42: Verstappen pits from second and Red Bull are concerned with the undercut threat from Bottas, who has been slowly closing in on the second-placed man.
Lap 43: Sainz pits from sevenths and he comes out just in front of Albon, who is looking racy on the new medium tyres. Albon tries to go around the outside of Turn 3 and 4, and Sainz pushes him wide to shut the door and retain 10th.
Lap 44: Stroll pits for a second time and goes back onto the soft tyres, dropping him from fourth down to eighth behind Norris, Kvyat and Vettel. The two-stoppers could get caught out if the rain arrives, while the one stoppers will be in great shape.
Lap 48: Bottas pits from second and he drops back behind Verstappen, coming out about 6.6s behind the Red Bull with fresh soft tyres and 17 laps to chase him down. The race is on.
