Rafael Nadal catches reporter asleep in his Australian Open press conference

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Roger Federer has been knocked out by Rafael Nadal in the French Open semi-final in what might be one of the last occasions we see these two legends of tennis go head to head on such a major stage.

For both Federer, 37, and Nadal, 33, chances to add to their extraordinary haul of grand slam titles will not keep coming along forever, and Nadal did not pass up the opportunity.

Both players progressed serenely to the last four, each dropping only one set en route, and Nadal clinched the match in straight sets to reach the final. Re-live it live:

*Federer 0-1 Nadal (15-40)

Federer struggling with his timing, and it's two break points!

But Nadal overhits, due to the wind, and Federer saves one...

*Federer 0-1 Nadal (40-40)

Superb shot here from Federer. He serves and volleys, but allows it to bounce and wrong-foots Nadal with a slice.

Deuce. All sorts of objects are flying across the court such is the velocity of the wind here!

Federer 0-2 Nadal*

Federer struggling to adapt to the wind, mistiming his backhand again, and Rafa has the early break!

Tough conditions it has to be said.

*Federer 0-3 Nadal

Nadal holds to love, as Federer struggles to time his groundstrokes on both sides.

After coming close to breaking Rafa in game number one, that opening will be tough for the Swiss to take.

3-0 - Rafa a break up.

Federer 1-3 Nadal*

Suddenly, Federer has found some rhythm!

A few aces, and a couple of winners, gives Federer his first game of the match.

Pressure straight back on Nadal.

Federer 1-3 Nadal* (30-30)

A superb bit of improvisation by Federer at the net, who wins the point at 15-15 with a backhand volley clipping the baseline!

But a sloppy error into the net by the Swiss means 30-30...

Federer 1-3 Nadal* (40-40)

Missed opportunity here for Federer.

A simple forehand approach is netted, but this time Rafa goes long with a forehand with the game in his grasp.

Deuce, and despite the conditions, both players are absolutely ripping the ball so far!

*Federer 2-3 Nadal

Federer breaks back!

Nadal nets after a beautiful backhand angle by Federer, and then Nadal uncharacteristically goes long again with his forehand.

The wind causing havoc for both players, but Federer dealing with it better there.

We're back on serve...

*Federer 2-3 Nadal (30-30)

A pattern is forming: the longer the rallies go on, the more it favours Nadal.

Both players impress on the front foot, and it's 30-30...

*Federer 2-3 Nadal (40-40)

Federer goes long and it's break point, and the Swiss really has to hassle, not just with Nadal but with the wind, but Nadal goes just wide with a backhand and we're at deuce once again...
