Having set a blistering pole position time with a new lap track record, Hamilton powered away to dominate the entire race and secure his second successive victory, keeping everyone at bay and at one point lapping all cars up to fifth position before deciding to take an additional pit stop to go for fastest lap, which he duly took to claim an addition world championship point.
Behind him, Max Verstappen drove a phenomenal recovery drive after crashing in the rain on his way to the grid to hold off Valtteri Bottas and take second place following an incredible re-build job from the Red Bull team on the grid, while both the Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc found themselved lapped on another disappointing day. Lap 65: Albon is in DRS range of Vettel in the fight for fifth, but he's running out of laps to make a move.
Lap 66: Still Hamilton continues on his way, while Bottas remains four seconds behind Verstappen in his late assault for second place. Will he catch him?
Lap 67: It's a slower 3.6s stop but Mercedes just take their time and Hamilton is back out well in front of Verstappen to retain the lead. Can he take the fastest lap and the extra point?
Lap 68: Vettel goes wide in Turn Two and Albon sneaks past! The Red Bull takes fifth place.
Lap 68: Hamilton gets the fastest lap in traffic, posting a 1:17.497 to take the extra point that will give him the championship lead outright.
Lap 70: Hamilton starts the final lap, and Bottas is right on the back of Verstappen!
Chequered flag: Hamilton wins the Hungarian Grand Prix for the eighth time, matching Michael Schumacher's tally for the most wins at a single track. Verstappen does enough to hold off Bottas to take an incredible second place, having start the day in the tyre barrier, and a delighted Dutchman thanks his mechanics for their incredible performance before the race. Bottas has to make do with third, and that gives Hamilton the overall lead in the world championship for the first time this season.
