It will take time for cricket community to accept David Warner and Steve Smith back, says England's Eoin Morgan

England's faltering World Cup campaign veered further off track as old rivals Australia booked their place in the semi-finals with a 64-run victory at Lord's.

After misadventures against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, England ran aground when chasing for the third time in the tournament, dismissed for an error-strewn 221.

With India and New Zealand still to play, there is now minimal leeway if the world's number one side are to reach the semi-finals of their own competition.

14.0 - Australia 71-0, A Finch 37, D Warner 29, M Wood 0-16 (2)

This is exactly what Australia would have been looking for, surviving the new ball spell and then looking to attack as the pitch pacifies and the ball softens. David Warner collects four and then three through the leg-side as Wood bowls too short and then too full.

He compounds a poor start to the over with a further error, a nothing ball to Finch that the Australian captain has few qualms with sending to the long-on fence with a short arm pull across a quickening outfield drying beneath a sun just starting to poke its head through the London cloud.

Jonny Bairstow has to get down quickly to his right at short midwicket to save another boundary and ensure it is only the 12 from a disappointing second over from Wood.

Woakes is indeed done after a seven-over spell first up.

Ben Stokes replaces him at the Nursery End.

15.0 - Australia 75-0, A Finch 39, D Warner 31, B Stokes 0-4 (1)

Competent bowling, competent batting. Four singles.

False shots aplenty early on, but David Warner and Aaron Finch are starting to look ominous...

16.0 - Australia 83-0, A Finch 47, D Warner 31, M Wood 0-24 (3)

Mark Wood hasn't really settled in here. He's a bowler who often struggles to keep his feet post-delivery stride and the slightly slippery Lord's surface has him reaching for the sawdust as he drops short and allows Finch to pull another four backward of square on the onside.

For all the seam movement early on, it looks a very decent batting surface, with the ball coming on to the bat nicely, as Finch shows with a smoking off-drive that bullets to the boundary. Over-pitched.

Time for a drink or two. England with some thinking to do.

Ben Burrows again chimes in from the ground:

Australia have weathered the early storm and appear set fair. Eoin Morgan's bowling changes haven't had the desired effect with Mark Wood in particular getting the treatment from Aaron Finch - a dismissed cover drive off his last over was the best stroke of the morning. He looks in the mood. England look a little lost in truth. Advantage Australia.

Indeed. Time for some spin as England grapple for some control. It's Moeen Ali from the Nursery End.

Harry Latham-Coyle25 June 2019 11:45

17.0 - Australia 89-0, A Finch 48, D Warner 37, Moeen Ali 0-7 (1)

Nothing readily apparent with regards to turn, bounce or grip for Moeen in his first. A comfortable seven from it. Worrying signs for England.

Adil Rashid replaces Mark Wood at the other end. Spin in tandem for England. It was a tactic that worked wonderfully against Australia last summer, but this is a different kettle of fish.
