Brilliant centuries from Jos Buttler and Joe Root were not enough to carry England to a record World Cup chase as Pakistan produced a stunning upset at Trent Bridge.

Root's 107 was the first ton of the tournament and Buttler was in irresistible form with 103 in 76 balls but both men fell before the finishing line, with Pakistan closing out a 14-run victory.

A target of 349 invited England to go where no other team had gone before at this level and while their master batsmen were in charge it looked as though they could, should and then would make it two wins from two. Re-live the action in the live blog below

England 288/6

100 for Jos Buttler! He's 103 off 75 balls after hammering one for four. He walloped that through extra-cover and away.

...and one ball later he's out!

It's a similar dismissal to Joe Root's after he got his hundred. It's a slower ball from Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz catches at second slip.

England wince.

England need 58 from 30 balls

46 England 296/6 Moeen Ali 15 Chris Woakes 4

Moeen needs to start finding the boundaries, these ones and twos are all well and good if you're setting the target, but England need much more here. 13 off 15 is nice, but we need more!

Three for over.

46 England 296/6 Moeen Ali 15 Chris Woakes 4

England have three boundaries in the last 10 overs. Great fielding from Pakistan to restrict them.

47 England 311/6 Moeen Ali 19 Chris Woakes 12

Woakes fires one high in the air and gets away with a looping shot as he comes back for two. The next ball is a boundary, great stuff from Woakes, whether he meant to edge that to slip or not, it was a good shot.

England need 38 from 18 to win as Moeen finds the boundary at third man.

47.2 England 319/6 Moeen Ali 19 Chris Woakes 14

Chris Woakes lifts it high into the off-side but it's dropped as England come back for two.

SIX! What a shot from Woakes, getting more length on his first effort and finding the boundary.

England 320/7

Wicket! Moeen 19

Chris Woakes gets off strike with a single, now for Moeen to show us what he can do....OUT!

He throws a limp arm at Wahab's delivery and it's caught at point by Fakhar Zaman. That's the kind of dismissal you would be disappointed with in a warm-up game or something against your second team as training. Very poor in a key moment for England.

320/8

Wicket Woakes (21)

It's over for England as there is mass celebrations from the Pakistan supporters.

Wahab Riaz takes a second in two balls and Sarfaraz Ahmed catches behind.

49.2 England 321/8

Adil Rashid skips to the right and tries to loop it over his head but can't quite time it. Dot ball.

49.3 England 322/8

Adil Rashid gets off the mark with a single into cover. Jofra Archer is keen for a second, but it isn't there for him.
