From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. England suffered a shock defeat to Sri Lanka in the Cricket World Cup at Headingley.

Eoin Morgan's men were on a high after a blistering innings from the skipper himself powered them to a 150-run win over Afghanistan at Old Trafford on Tuesday. But they came crashing down to earth at Headingley as Lasith Malinga shredded their top order on the way to a famous win.

Here's how it played out:

Please allow a moment for the live blog to load

Sri Lanka: 158-5 (36 overs) Matthews 37 (68), de Silva 17 (25)

Another good over by Rashid, just four singles from it.

Wicket preservation seemingly the priority at the moment for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka: 160-5 (37 overs)

Ali bowls ten on the spin, and finishes off with just two from his final over.

His stats: 10 overs, 40 runs, 0 wickets, 4.00 economy

Sri Lanka: 164-5 (38 overs)

Only four from Rashid's penultimate over, four singles.

Man of the moment Joe Root now comes into the attack...

Sri Lanka: 168-5 (39 overs)

A pretty varied over from Root there, but only four singles from it... that'll do!

Rashid now starting his 10th and final over.

Sri Lanka: 168-5 (39.1 overs)

An appeal off the first ball for a stumping, but Angelo Matthews' foot is comfortably in his crease on review.

Sri Lanka: 171-5 (40 overs) Matthews 43 (80), de silva 24 (38)

Excellent conclusion by Rashid, only three from his final over.

He finishes with figures of 2-45, very good spell.

We're into the final 10 overs and into the third and final powerplay.

Kieran Jackson21 June 2019 13:10

Sri Lanka: 173-5 (40.1 overs)

Sri Lanka push for two, and just make it home as Root gets the bails off very sharply.

3rd umpire review shows Matthews was comfortably home though.

Sri Lanka: 180-5 (41 overs)

50 FOR ANGELO MATTHEWS!

Finally, a Sri Lankan batsman makes 50, with a four swept down to the fine-leg boundary after a poor delivery by Root.

50 from 84 deliveries - after a slow start, a very useful innings by Sri Lanka's no.5.

Jofra Archer comes back into the attack - he's got five overs in the bank.
