Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Australia are looking to return to winning ways against Sri Lanka after losing to India in their previous World Cup match.

Aaron Finch makes one change to the side with Jason Behrendorff replacing Nathan Coulter-Nile, who is struggling with a minor injury.

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first a The Oval.

2.3 Sri Lanka 24-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 10 Kusal Perera 13

It's getting ominously dark at the Oval. The black clouds hovering nearby suggest there might well be some rain on its way.

3.0 Sri Lanka 26-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 12 Kusal Perera 13

Much better from Starc. Sri Lanka manage just two off the over and the rapid early run rate is quelled.

4.0 Sri Lanka 30-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 15 Kusal Perera 14

Cummins follows suit, keeping things tight and allowing Sri Lanka just four runs from the over. Karunaratne swings and misses dangerously and then squirms one through the infield for three.

5.0 Sri Lanka 31-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 16 Kusal Perera 14

An early change of bowlers for Australia. Jason Behrendorff replaces Starc and makes a promising start, swinging the ball away from the left-handed Karunaratne. There's a half-hearted appeal for LBW, too, which comes to nothing. Just one run comes from the over.

5.3 Sri Lanka 39-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 24 Kusal Perera 14

An excellent pull shot from Karunaratne punishes a poor short ball from Cummins. It races away to the boundary, and the following delivery hits the inside edge and trickles behind for another four.

6.0 Sri Lanka 40-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 25 Kusal Perera 14

15.1 Afghanistan 56-2

WICKET! Rahmat (6) b Morris lbw

Afghanistan lose their second wicket. Rahmat is given out by the umpire, and his decision is justified when Afghanistan call for a review. The ball would have clipped leg stump.

7.0 Sri Lanka 53-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 37 Kusal Perera 15

Sri Lanka have brought up 50 in quick time. Behrendorff's second over is an expensive one, with Karunaratne hitting two more boundaries. The first is a swivel pull to fine leg and the second a fortunate inside edge.

8.0 Sri Lanka 61-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 42 Kusal Perera 18

Australia make another change of bowler but they still can't stop the runs from flowing. Kane Richardson enters the attack and gets hit for eight runs in his first over.

8.3 Sri Lanka 74-0 Dimuth Karunaratne 42 Kusal Perera 31

This is superb batting from Sri Lanka's opening pair. Behrendorff, who made such a promising start, is smashed for six over cover by Perera. It's timed perfectly, and hit ferociously. Australia then gift Sri Lanka four more runs with an overthrow after an attempted run out.
