Joe Root and Joe Denly both passed fifty in pursuit of a target of 359, and though the latter departed soon after reaching his half-century, England’s captain remains unbeaten overnight on 75.
Root’s fine hand ensures England maintain slim hopes of pulling off the most remarkable of chases, and you can see how the third day’s action all unfolded below:

Odds
England to win: 8/11
Australia to win: 21/10
Draw: 29/4
Prediction
England to win: As long as the weather plays ball, this could be the moment the series swings in England’s favour. With Jofra Archer set to renew his bowling assault and no Steve Smith to dig Australia out of trouble, England should be able to level the series here with bright sunshine forecast for the weekend.
ENG 6-0
England have learned from watching Warner and Labuschagne. Roy taps the last ball of the over into the legside and scrambles through for one as mid-on goes to field it.
The two Australian batsmen ran well together and Burns and Roy have started well too.
ENG 6-0
Josh Hazlewood opens up at the other end and gets an inswinger to nip back at the England opener. It rattles the top of Roy's pads and Australia jump up in appeal.
Joel Wilson turns them down, the ball would have gone over the stumps.
ENG 6-0
Hazlewood has started a lot straighter to Roy who looks a little suspect trying to play the ball off his pads. The ball is moving back into the right hander and Roy should be wary of the one that straightens...
... there we are, the ball straightens outside the off stump, Roy tries to drive it and misses.
ENG 6-0
Maiden for Hazlewood. As expected the opening bowlers are have found their lines straight away. This won't be easy for England.
ENG 6-0
Cummins sends down a short ball at Burns. 86mph but Burns ducks underneath it and smiles.
It's followed up with a full ball on the stumps and Burns strides forward to defend it.
ENG 10-0
Cummins follows Hazlewood's maiden with one of his own.
Oh shot! Hazlewood drags his length back but sends the ball wide of off stump, Roy rocks back and cuts it through point for four!
ENG 10-1
GONE! Roy falls cheaply again!
He looked confident in the over, dispatching a short ball for four, so Hazlewood bowls it fuller and wider. Roy can't resist, he throws the bat at it, and nicks off to David Warner at first slip.
England lose their first wicket.
Roy c Warner b Hazlewood 9 (15)
ENG 10-1
England's captain is the new man in. His last innings was the first golden duck of his test career.
He betters that today as Hazlewood angles the ball into him, Root gets an outside edge on the ball from a defensive block and it falls well short of gully.
ENG 10-1
Cummins elects to come round the wicket to Burns. The England opener has left well so far but Cummins gets one to angle in and nip away from the left hander.
Burns played the line of the ball and missed it by some way when it moved off the pitch.
