Xander Schauffele is The Open champion after carding a faultless final round to hold off the challenge of Justin Rose and win his second major championship of the year at Troon.

Schauffele, who won his first major title at the PGA Championship in May, shot a wonderful bogey-free round of 65, with six birdies, to take charge of a dramatic final round and lift the Claret Jug.

The American made crucial birdies at the 11th, 12th and 14th holes to move clear of a frustrated Rose, as well as Thriston Lawrence and overnight leader Billy Horschel, after the trio shared the lead heading into the back nine.

Schauffele’s victory means all four of this season’s majors have been won by Americans for the first time since 1982, with Scottie Scheffler winning the Masters and Bryson DeChambeau claiming the US Open.

Rose matched his best Open finish as the 43-year-old birdied the final hole to claim a share of second along with Horschel, while 2019 Open champion Shane Lowry finished sixth.

Bogey for Horschel!

The leader drops a shot at the par-4 third, and there’s a big swing as his playing partner Lawrence rolls in a birdie putt to join him and Rose in the lead on -4.

Scheffler escapes wonderfully from the bunker on the par-3 fifth, while on the par-5 fourth Rose has rolled a lovely approach to inside 10 feet.

SHANE LOWRY!

The Irishman rolls in a monster putt on the par-3 fifth, from 30 feet or more!

Lowry roars as he gets to -2!

Brown, though, drops to join him after getting into trouble in the bunker while Scheffler makes his par.

Oooh. Horschel has drilled his approach on the third into the greenside bunker. Up ahead, Brown has landed into big trouble on the par-5 fourth, and his first attempt to get out of the steep bunker fails to clear the lip.

Scheffler ended up in the same bunker as Brown, but makes it out and onto the green in three. Burns drops a shot at the third, so joins the group on -2.

Rose misses the chance to join Horschel on -5, as his birdie putt never quite had the line.

Horschel ended up having a clear sight of the green and has landed his approach safely on the putting surface. The leader looks in a good position to make par.

Lowry moves back into the red after a sensational escape from the bunker on the par-5 fourth. He knocks in his birdie.

Rose has now landed a lovely approach into the third green and will have a look at a second birdie in a row from inside eight feet, while Schauffele sees a birdie putt of his own break left and miss.

Horschel has landed into the crowd on the left, but gets a drop. He’s way, way out from the fairway.

Birdie for Billy Horschel!

The overnight leader makes the perfect start with an opening birdie! Horschel moves to -5 as he rolls in from 12 feet or so... but the American has sent his drive at the second veering left.

Birdie for Justin Rose!

A brilliant start for the Englishman, as that approach into the second is rewarded. Rose rolls in his birdie putt, while Scheffler now jumps up to -3 with a birdie at the third. Plenty of early birdies for those at the front.

Schauffele almost chips in on the second, where Rose has given himself a great position to make birdie.

The leader is now underway, as Horschel makes a safe approach into the first green, but Lawrence lands in all sorts of bother in the fairway bunker.

Both Rose and Schauffele make par on the first, while Scheffler finds the green from the rough to give himself a birdie chance on two. He doesn’t take it though, and stays on -2.

On the Postage Stamp, Rahm clips his tee shot with plenty of backspin and gets within a few feet of the pin – it’s a touch high though, and he knocks in for par.

Lowry has another birdie chance and it should be par for the Irishman, but he lips out! He’ll move to even.

Adam Scott has made a charge up the leaderboard too – he’s two shots off the lead after two birdies in three.

Brown birdies the second to make up for his earlier bogey. He’s back to -3. The last pair will be teeing off any moment now.

Rose takes the nine-iron to get him onto the green in regulation, but it rolls slightly down the hill. A small chance at a birdie, perhaps?

Schauffele’s second shot lands a few feet closer to the pin, creeping onto the green. A better birdie chance for the American, but he doesn’t take it.

On seven, Rahm has engineered another birdie attempt after landing his approach shot within a few feet of the pin, and he holes it to move to -2.

Burns and Henley, the penultimate pair, have just teed off.

Further down the course, it’s looking like Max Homa and Jason Day’s slim chances of contending are over, after three straight pars for Day and three bogeys in four for Homa.
