Ryder Cup 2018: Europe on top after day one

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Europe seized control of the 2018 Ryder Cup on a thrilling second day in Paris.

The hosts took the morning fourballs 3-1 before keeping that advantage in the afternoon foursomes to take what could prove a decisive 10-6 lead into the final day.

Here's how it played out:

Who's playing?

Some of the very best golfers on the planet. Tiger Woods leads the American team while new world number one Justin Rose is Europe's leading light.

Who's going to win?

USA Evens

Europe 5/4

Draw 11/1

Fleetwood & Molinari vs Woods & Reed (A/S)

Francesco Molinari is not a mortal man. With the pressure on, he hits the gentlest of fades into the pin and it's a foot away from a hole-in-one. Good lord.

Garcia & McIlroy (4UP) vs Koepka & Finau

What a let-off and again it's Finau who's buckled under the pressure of a short-putt. It should have been a routine birdie from four feet but now any illusions of a comeback are in the sink. Koepka waits behind to console him. Good partnership from him.

Fleetwood & Molinari (1UP) vs Woods & Reed

Molinari holes it. His caddie whips up the crowd. This is a pairing for the ages and they take the lead once more.

Garcia & McIlroy (4UP) vs Koepka & Finau

Finau has missed the fairway again at the par-5 fourteenth but Koepka has his back this time. He's in pole position in the group as his long-iron runs through the back of the green. Garcia is a mile back for his third but McIlroy is better off in the greenside rough after two. The US need this hole otherwise it's dormie.

Poulter & Rahm vs Spieth & Thomas (A/S)

This is the only group which looks an immediate concern for the Europeans. Rahm is yet to hit form today and after Poulter's wonderful effort at seven he's struggled to hole everything. Another chance to take the lead slips by at ten.

Casey & Hatton (2UP) vs Johnson & Fowler

Brilliant shots by Hatton and Johnson at twelve. The pin is tucked just beyond the water at the front of the green and both of their shots stop dead either side of the hole and can't be more than a few feet from the hole.

Garcia & McIlroy (3UP) vs Koepka & Finau

And that birdie from Koepka will be good enough to peg them back. McIlroy hits an awful wedge from the long rough and has a putt across the meadow at fourteen for birdie. Sergio also misses it goes to 3UP with four to play.

Fleetwood & Molinari (2UP) vs Woods & Reed

He does it again. Francesco Molinari deserves a magnum of Barolo at the bare minimum the way he has played in Paris so far. Woods and Reed continue to chunk away like a pair of gardeners and the Italian finds a birdie putt from 20 feet at twelve.

Ben Burrows29 September 2018 11:10

Poulter & Rahm vs Spieth & Thomas (1UP)

Yep. It felt like it had been coming. Spieth holes a great putt at eleven and there's finally something for the Americans to cheer.
