Ryder Cup 2018: Europe on top after day one

Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

Poulter & McIlroy vs Spieth & Thomas (3UP)

McIlroy's got the telescope out on the green here. He's some 65 foot from the hole and he has to go onto the fringe to ride the slope and mountaineer his way up a hill. He's up to the former but the latter bests him. It's sprinted ten feet past the hole but Poulter makes it. It was all over if he missed that.

Rose & Stenson (1UP) vs Koepka & Johnson

Brooks Koepka hits the bullseye on fifteen with a peach of an iron shot. It's less than a foot from the hole and is conceded immediately. Stenson hits a good shot to give Rose a chance but he can't hole it from just over ten feet and all of a sudden this match is really tight again with three holes to play.

Rose & Stenson (1UP) vs Koepka & Johnson

Koepka follows it up with a solid shot into the par-3 sixteenth but Stenson has tugged it and it's gone way past the hole. Rose needs a great chip down the hill here.

Rose & Stenson (1UP) vs Koepka & Johnson

It's impossible to stop it down the slope though. It's rolled way past. It's Johnson next. He has the line but it runs out of breath with just a few inches to go.

Rose & Stenson (1UP) vs Koepka & Johnson

Rose & Stenson are looking at this one together now. It's the Swede to hit it and this is a huge moment. In!

One up, two to play.

Garcia & Noren vs Watson & Simpson (4UP)

While that was all going on the Europeans have gone down dormie-four in the second match. Garcia had a six footer for a  birdie and the half on fourteen but he's missed.

Poulter & McIlroy vs Spieth & Thomas (4UP)

Spieth & Thomas have pulled four clear now. They get a birdie at thirteen and Poulter & McIlroy just can't find a birdie anywhere. All but done in this one too.

Rose & Stenson (1UP) vs Koepka & Johnson

Johnson has hit a horrible pull off the seventeenth tee just when he needed to heap on the pressure. It's a really horrible shot and it's deep in the hay. Stenson goes sensible as a result and finds the fairway

Rose & Stenson (1UP) vs Koepka & Johnson

Hulk Koepka hacks it out the hay well though and it just comes up short of the green. Rose misjudges it and they're also short. It's a chip-off and Johnson's stabby little lob wedge was ugly but effective. Rose's wasn't brilliant either.
