Ryder Cup 2018: Europe on top after day one

Europe seized control of the 2018 Ryder Cup on a thrilling second day in Paris.

The hosts took the morning fourballs 3-1 before keeping that advantage in the afternoon foursomes to take what could prove a decisive 10-6 lead into the final day.

It all gets underway at 7.10am on Saturday morning with the opening fourballs.

Ed Malyon is greenside at seventeen:

McIlroy and Garcia have held off a spirited fightback here to secure victory. Even halfway down the fairway it appeared as if the Europeans were under the cosh a little but Garcia’s putt was money to win a match where Koepka and (particularly) Finau made too many mistakes.

Casey & Hatton def. Johnson & Fowler 3&2

And the dominos begin to fall. Thomas Bjorn showed faith in the pair after their spirited but ultimately fruitless fightback yesterday. They've more than repaid him. Fowler had a chance to send it to dormie down seventeen but failed to make par and it's all over.

Paul Casey went on a birdie spree on the front-nine but there were some absolute jewels from Tyrrell Hatton on the back. His approach into twelve in particular was a special shot. He's very Poulter-esque.

Reed has been atrocious today. Again he's in the rough. Again he can't recover. It's in the water at fifteen and Woods can only chip out too. There's blood in the air again.

Ed Malyon is front and centre for Reed's capitulation:

Patrick Reed playing from the rough on 16, as he has done most of the morning, fetches it out the long stuff but straight into the water. “Hate to see it, Patrick” quips one spectator. No shushing now, only the silenced Reed contemplating an afternoon on the sofa.

Poulter & Rahm vs Spieth & Thomas (1UP)

Rahm thinks he's levelled the match with a birdie at fourteen. Thomas has about twelve feet left to halve the hole and it swerves its way in. Great putt at a key moment with the points raining blue. Thomas is uncharacteristically pumped up. He puts his hand to the ear and begs for more from the crowd.

Ed Malyon:

Tensions rising at the 14th. Thomas nails a crucial clutch putt to stay 1up and cups his ear to the gallery, earning plenty of boos. Meanwhile, I’m standing next to Gerard Depardieu and one of the US entourage has just told him to sit down. All going off here.

Fleetwood & Molinari def. Woods & Reed 4&3

For a while this match was on a thread. It felt like if Woods and Reed could come to form they could take a hold on the back nine but instead it was Planet Moliwood who trounced four holes in a row. What a special pairing this has been.

It sums up quite how poor Woods and Reed have been that the Europeans were able to win the hole and match with a par.
