From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The visitors at Le Golf National led 3-1 after the morning fourballs after Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson all impressed on their way to victories over their European foes. But the hosts came roaring back in the afternoon taking all four matches to completely swing the contest and seize the momentum heading into Saturday
Here's how it all unfolded:

Welcome along to live coverage of the opening day of the 2018 Ryder Cup. If your appetite still needs whetting for this one, then look no further than Jonathan Liew's preview:
We're just over ten minutes away from the first tee off at the 42nd Ryder Cup.
And what a way it is to start too. FedEx Cup champion and world no.1 Justin Rose partners Jon Rahm while for the US it's PGA Tour player of the year Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau.
Brooks Koepka won three of his four matches at Hazeltine but missed the cut on his last visit to Le Golf National in 2014.
The 6,500 seat grandstand behind the first tee has been full for over an hour.
The players are now on the tee and it will be the Americans to start. A huge roar goes up for Rose and Rahm and a few boos ring towards their counterparts.
Tony Finau's ball is barely safe from the water on the left but Brooks Koepka is as nerveless as ever easing himself into perfect position in the fairway.
And now it's the turn of the Europeans. Justin Rose takes the lead and sends one down the right side of the fairway. Rahm urges on the crowd who roar back in return and he absolutely crashes it down there. What a way to start your first Ryder Cup.
Ed Malyon checks in from the first:
Well that was raucous. And for all the incredible noise perhaps the most amazing thing is how it all subsides to less than a whisper as the players step up to take their tee shots. If Finau was a little taken by the nerves it showed, the final of the 24 players to be chosen he is just inches from the water and facing a tough task. The other three balls are sitting nicely on the fairway.
