Brooks Koepka held off the challenge of Viktor Hovland and the surging Scottie Scheffler to win his third US PGA Championship title and fifth major.

Koepka, who felt he had "choked" when holding the 54-hole lead at the Masters last month, kept his cool to shoot a final-round 66 at Oak Hill Country Club.

Hovland kept the pressure on and reduced Koepka’s lead to one with five holes to play - but the Norwegian’s chances evaporated with a double bogey at the 16th.

Scheffler’s fine 65 saw the American get to within two of Koepka, who held on to win his first major since his last PGA Championship in 2019.

The highlight of the day came from club professional Michael Block, the 46-year-old making a hole-in-one on the 15th as he played the final round alongside Rory McIlroy, who finished in a tie for seventh place.

Follow all the reaction and latest updates from Oak Hill below:

Davis into fourth

Davis -3 (17)

The big-hitting Aussie is having himself a round out there at Oak Hill. Having made an eagle on the par-four 14th, he knocks in a birdie 17 to move into a tie for fifth. Impressive stuff.

Hovland makes good par save

Koepka -7 (9), Hovland -6 (9)

Hovland shows some more deft touch from the thick rough to get the ball just on the green and feeding down toward the hole. He taps in for par and so does Brooks.

Onto the back nine we go...

Mixed fortunes for Scheffler and Rose

Scheffler -4 (10), Rose -2 (10)

Scheffler bounces immediately back after a bogey on nine to make birdie on ten and move back to four under. Rose races past his birdie effort and his par effort coming back lips out. Not what he needed and he’s back to level par for the day.

Conners and DeChambeau make the turn

Conners -3 (9), DeChambeau - 4 (9)

Conners and DeChambeau both par the ninth and head towards the back nine. They’ll need to pick up some shots if either are going to challenge the leader.

Wayward of the tee from Koepka

Koepka -7 (8), Hovland -6 (8)

Nothing is ever certain in golf and Koepka is demonstrating that. He looked in total control a few holes ago but now seems a bit unsure over the ball. His drive on the ninth goes way left and lands amongst the crowd. He muscles his ball to the front of the green from the trodden-down rough.

Viktor has the middle of the fairway all to himself but it’s an unforced error from the Norweigan with a seven iron and it’s over the back and in the rough. A tough up and down to save par.

Scheffler drops back

Scheffler -3 (9), Rose -3 (9)

Just when things were starting to get moving for the Scheffler, he gives one back to the course with a bogey on the ninth. Rose misses his birdie effort and shows a hint of frustration and he remains at three under.

Good par save for Hovland

Koepka -7 (8), Hovland -6 (8)

Viktor is in the rough off the tee and muscles one towards the green but it just runs off and gets caught in the rough. It requires an expert touch to get it towards the hole and he shows just that. Nicely done by Hovland to make par.

Koepka trickles down his birdie effort and taps in for a par. He remains in the lead by one.

Consecutive birdies for Rory

McIlroy -2 (10), Block +2 (10)

The Rory experience continues as he makes birdies at nine and ten to move up to two under par. A massive eight holes needed for him if he’s to post a score. Block makes par and remains two over par.

Ben Fleming21 May 2023 21:14

DeChambeau bounces back

Conners -3 (8), DeChambeau -4 (8)

The American knocks one in close and makes no mistake to get back up to three under par. He’s now just three back and certainly not out of it.

Bogeys for Koepka and Hovland

Koepka -7 (7), Hovland -6 (7)

Well, well, well. Has Brooks fully exorcised those final-day Masters demons? His second shot is poor and lands awkwardly in the lip of the bunker and it’s a tricky up and down. He does well to get it out on the putting surface but he can’t make par with the long-range effort. Back-to-back bogeys for him now.

Hovland is in trouble off the tee and has to lay up on the par four. It’s a long wedge into the green but he too leaves himself too much to do to save his par.

More dropped shots but Koepka maintains his one-shot lead for now.
