Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

What a World Cup 2018 so far! We’ve had Cristiano Ronaldo shine as Lionel Messi faltered, Spain pretty much coach themselves, Russia hit five and VAR make its mark on the tournament. And day four is even more exciting.

Costa Rica kick it all off against Serbia at 1pm BST before two of the heavy favourites make their first marks in Russia this summer.

World champions Germany start their campaign to become only the second team to retain the trophy against Mexico at the Luzhniki Stadium before Brazil, who have won this competition more than any other country, take on Switzerland in Group E.

So, let’s get to it!

12 minutes gone, and this game is surprisingly open early on. Giancarlo Gonzalez has just had a golden chance, heading over from just a couple of yards away. 0-0.

Approaching the half-hour mark, and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic bursts in behind, taking down an over-the-top ball beautifully but his effort is tame and simply saved by Keylor Navas. It remains 0-0.

Bologna's Giancarlo Gonzalez really should have done better here.

Heavy collision between Johnny Acosta and Dusko Tosic as they compete for a bouncing ball. Both are alright to carry on, though.

Entertaining stuff thus far, with chances at both ends. No goals, though. Costa Rica 0 - 0 Serbia

About two hours until Germany kick off against Mexico. They are, of course, the defending champions, but Jack Pitt-Brooke has been speaking to Tim Borowski about their 2006 semi-final exit in Dortmund:

Back underway in Samara.

Outstanding! Aleksandar Kolarov knows how to hit a free-kick, and he's curled a beauty from the about 30 yards out on the right-hand side of the box. Deserved lead for Serbia, who have been well on top since the game's resumption.
