From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sweden were the shock winners of Group F, which saw Germany finish bottom in an enthralling final round of fixtures.
Switzerland on the other hand saw off the challenge of Serbia to make sure they went through behind tournament favourites Brazil.

Odds:
Sweden: 2/1
Switzerland: 7/4
Draw after 90 minutes: 2/1
Prediction:
Sweden 2-1 Switzerland. It will be a close game between the two and despite Switzerland being the higher-ranked side, Sweden’s performances so far look like they could be enough to guide them through. Just.
Pre-match we said Forsberg must improve his end product, and by virtue of some luck he did
79 mins: Breel Embolo looking a talent since his arrival to the pitch...he has forced some corners and looks lively
Switzerland have an effort cleared off the line by Forsberg from one of those corners, but it looked as though Olsen would be equal to it anyway
82 mins: Olsson ON Forsberg OFF Krafth ON Lustig OFF in a double change for Sweden
86 mins: Switzerland really going for broke now as they pile numbers into the box. Their most recent attack came to a premature end as Shaqiri slightly over hit his cross, which went out for a corner
89 mins: Switzerland could do with another piece of magic from Xherdan Shaqiri...
91 mins: Berg OFF Thelin ON in a late change for Sweden. We have three minutes of added time
94 mins: PENALTY FOR SWEDEN. Red card for Michael Lang. That will be that as the penalty will likely be the final action of the half.
Or is it? The foul may have been outside the box and the referee has a look at the screen.
95 mins: Its a free kick just on the edge of the box! No penalty as the contact was adjudged to be outside of the box
FULL TIME: Sweden 1-0 Switzerland
Sweden are through to the quarter finals after a cruel deflection from Manuel Akanji sent Emil Forsberg's shot into the net past a helpless Yann Sommer. The game was far from a classic, but Sweden won't care!
